When to change transmission fluid

Does the transmission fluid need replacement on a time basis as well as mileage? ie 3 years or 100,000kms?

I change my transmission fluid every 30K miles. It just seems like cheap insurance. I do take it to the dealer and have it done, it cost $89.00 and is well worth it.

There is a lot of debate on this website as to when to replace the fluid. There are a few factors involved, such as:
How hard do you drive?
Do you tow?
Do you use it offroad?
Do you do a lot of city stop, and go driving?
The type of ATF (regular, semi synthetic, or full synthetic).
The size of your transmission cooler.

It's also a good idea to check your radiator to make sure it is always full, since the integrated transmission cooler needs to always be saturated with coolant. Is that complete fluid change? My dealer wants to charge $160 for a complete fluid change using there machine. I need your hook-ups.

The $89.00 flush is using there machine. The dealer closer to the D/FW metroplex wants $149.00. I take it to a ford dealer in a small town about 40 miles away. They are always cheaper.
