I've been pulling the pan here and there trying to fix my trans problem and it would help me greatly to add a drain plug. Does anybody sell some kind of retrofit plug/kit? I was thinking of welding a nut to the pan and putting a regular bolt with a gasket. But if there's a better solution please let me know asap. Thanks.

Try advance auto parts or pepboy's it will be in the oil section.

If you use a large enough drain pan and leak tray(2'x3'), the job is no big deal. I know that it can be a mess, but I have installed 4-5 plugs, and two ended up leaking slightly.

The plug kits are poorly made, the metal is cheap and could break if tightened too much. The designs are not really good for leak prevention. There is often a cheap plastic washer in those kits. The best way to install those is usually to use Ultra Black RTV on both the threads and both sides of the pan. Also it is common for the whole fitting to loosen instead of the actual tiny plug, when you try to use it.

In the end they are so poorly designed that I won't do one again, I still have the last spare kit which I bought. It's gathering dust, and I don't plan to use it.

Just take your time during the first couple of minutes dropping the pan, it's no big deal. Good luck,

I've dropped it 3 times already with a huge lawn trash bag under and a big tupperware storage tray for a drain pan. It's still a mess and I might have to drop it at least 3 more times. So I figured I could crack it open and let it drain very easily. I may do the weld method, they have all kinds of oil gaskets at my local hardware store.

I agree that a welded plug would be a good idea, that had crossed my mind on about the second one that I installed. If one of those plugs had a decent quality of steel to be able to weld it, that would be ideal. Good luck,
