Because its a 1998 explorer. and thats what they came with.. (unless of course someone changed out your axle to something else, but you would problably know if someone did that)..

If you really want to be sure.. look at the "tag" that is on the rear diff.. I believe it actually says 8.8 right on it, along with the gear ratio and other stuff.
