Hi Folks,

This may sound like a real stupid question. But where is the passenger volume radio control on the 2011 Ford Explorer? I bought the Limited model in the US and drove it straight to Mexico. I have the control on the steering wheel but there seems to be no place where my wife can play with the radio while I drive.

We have the touch screen sitting above the Dual Auto Temp. Control panel below. We have read the instruction book from cover to cover and can find no way that the passenger can control the volume without having to reach over to the steering wheel!!

Help!

Its the big knob in the middle of the panel below MFT - it turns.

Volume Controls

Its the big knob in the middle of the panel below MFT - it turns.

Thanks a million! We have poked, punched and pushed all over that damn control panel and missed the fact that that big knob TURNS!

We really like the car, but are less than delighted with the My Touch business. Way too complicated for what I need a car to do.

Again..thanks,

Tuanputih

Other than being a little slow to respond I have no trouble with MFT, of course I just use the basic functions. None of this ipod stuff etc. It's a generational thing.

I am very pleased to see that you have moved the emergency flasher out of the center of the panel, like on my 2011 Explorer Ltd.. It is just way too easy to bump it while working the controls.

I bought this 2011 Ford for my use in Mexico. Mexico's roads are a lot rougher (read cobblestones) than the USA roads. This makes the touch screen business much more difficult to manage than nice large round knobs!

BTW, where do I go to buy the chip that contains the Mexico maps? When they sold me the car they told me that the USA chip also has Canada and Mexico. Well the sales guy was wrong. It may have Canada, but it does not have Mexico!

Thanks,

I totally agree with you. I will never use 90% of the capabilities of that control panel. Plus I really hate to take my eyes of the road to fool around with all this stuff.

I do a lot of motorcycling and have developed the habit of never looking away from the road. All this glitzy stuff on the panel is just a distraction.

Cheers,

Tuanputih

The video is not an Explorer though.

Tuanputih,

There are two different SD cards. One is for U.S. and Canada and the other is for U.S. and Mexico. Additional cards should be available for purchase through our dealers but since the performance upgrade is coming, they may not be. If you have a dealer close to you in Mexico, I suggest calling to see if they have any.

Everyone should keep in mind that the dealer will tell you just about anything to get you to buy the vehicle, either because they have no clue or are shady or both. You have to do your homework or otherwise get it in writing.

A guy I know bought a 2011 Ex from an out of state dealer and was told it had navigation (dealer told him it was standard on the Limited). It arrived and did not and he had no recourse. He wound up having to trade it in at a local dealer because his wife refused to drive the one without navi and Ford refuses to add it no matter what you're willing to pay.

So Ford wouldn't add Navigation after they offered $100,000 cash to add it?

Here's the rub - the dealer wasn't likely outright lying, but was more than likely confused between the navigation system and the turn-by-turn directions through Sync. So long as your Explorer has sync, it has turn-by-turn, but not necessarily navigation. Reading these boards, it seems as if dealers are getting confused between the two (as are customers). I've heard many stories of customers thinking they are getting nav only to find out they are not.

As far as having no recourse - I would talk to an attorney if I were him - he may be able to have the attorney send a nasty letter to the dealership for a small fee. Sometimes that's all it takes. Of course this all depends on the particular facts of the case. Perhaps he really is out of luck.

Rebecca,
If you are monitoring this thread, I'd think Ford would be interested in allowing users without the nav to add it later via. a software update for this very reason. Dealerships are getting confused, as are customers and are not getting what they intended. Maybe its something you can pass up the chain.

My view? I think the dealers need to invest at least as much time in learning what the hell they're selling as we members of an online forum do, because their average level of knowledge sucks out loud.

As for your first statement I disagree strongly if you are implying that about all dealers. The dealers (Ford, Toyota) I have dealt with the past 13 years or more have been very knowledgeable about the product and not the least bit 'shady'.

As for the second part. Anyone buying an item sight unseen is leaving themselves open to possible problems. I ordered my 2011 Explorer (Dec. 2010) sight unseen because they weren't out yet. I was somewhat apprehensive about it until it arrived. The old saying, Buyer beware!
As jrmexplorer said, perhaps there was some confusion about what was actually wanted.
In any case, navigation can not be added after the fact. There have been other posts on this and it has to be added at the factory.

Aren't we also getting a little offtrack here? The thread is entitled, Where is the passenger radio volume control.

How did he not verify that the vehicle had Navigation by LOOKING AT IT before signing the final paperwork?

It was an out of state used purchase and it was already paid for cash before it was delivered to him. His father happens to own a dealership local to the dealership where the vehicle was located, and even with the extra help he still wound up with a non-navi limited. I agree it was likely due to confusion between sync directions and actual navigation however that goes to show just how confused everyone is with the new Ford IVT. Luckily he paid way under retail for it and ended up trading it in for more than he paid. For this reason he wasn't interested in making a stink about it, he just went ahead and got a new 2012.

When I bought my Ex my sales guy told me that if I needed any help with Sync/MFT to let them know and they'd send a Sync specialist to my house to do a tutorial.

I wasn't implying that all dealers are shady, just that if you have never dealt with a particular dealer I wouldn't trust that they have your best interest in mind over their own. I've purchased from Honda, Mazda, Infiniti, Toyota, Ford, and Nissan both new and used. It all boils down to the dealership and the salesperson. What I have found across the board is that I've known more about the vehicle I'm looking to buy than the salesman on every vehicle except for one. Yes this is due to how **** I am and how much homework I do (usually a month+) before even contacting a dealer, however the average person doesn't do this and is ripe for not getting what they want. So yes, buyer beware!
