i dont know where ive looked on numerous sites and found some that would work in the same year mustang thats a v6, and if im correct the mustangs that are v6 in 98 had the same engines as the explorers? anyway i want a chip that addes max horsepower and somewhat stabalizes the gas mileage, it wasnt a problem for my dad in his diesel, he got a chip that adds 90 HP and he was getting like 25 miles a gallon, anyway give me what you got and let me know exact HP incline the chip is suppose to give...thanks

Don't get a "chip" get a flash tuner. Before I say anything else I'm going to tell you that diesels respond to a tune much more than a gasoline motor. You'll probably get around 10-20hp from one. But that's just one of the benefits, better gas mileage and better shifting from the transmission are nice too. I recommend www.hensonperformance.com he is a vendor here on the forum he goes by jah81592. He's tuned a lot of explorers on this site and everyone of them has been a happy customer.

No, a '98 Mustang does NOT have the same engine as an Explorer. A '98 Mustang has a 3.8L-V6. Vey different motor. In any case, the pcm/ecm is often very different form one vehicle family to the next, and even within the same yr/make/model, what fits one may not fit another.

I 2nd Techieman's suggestion though. Talk to James @ Henson Performance. You need an Xcal3 w/ some custom tuning. Between the transmission shift changes, and the engine tuning, it will feel like a whole new truck. I do have to say (and James will probably say it himself), don't expect much, if any improvement in mpg. There are some things that can be done in the tune to improve mpg significantly (search for "Aldive" 's threads), but it seems that the custom tuners don't want to get involved with it. I'm thinking of buying the pro-racer software and tinkering myself soon. But, and no offense, from the sound of your post, that would be way beyond what you are ready for at this point.

In terms of what else you can do that MIGHT get you some mpg, and defenitely better performance:
1.) Cat-back exhaust - James has these (or cat-less, but sshhhhh. the pc green police are listening....)
2.) Underdrive crank pulley - James again
3.) Replace your stock clutch fan with an electric. (junkyard fans from Mark VIII, 3.8L Taurus/Sables, and some others seem to be popular. The Flex-A-Lite Black Magic 180 is a good choice for new.)
4.) Synthetic fluids in everything, and you're using full-synthetic 5w30 in the motor, right? ( I like Mobil 1, or Quaker State Q)
5.) Reduce weight (no "oversize" or "off-road" tires) (maybe replace your steel spare with an aluminum wheel)
6.) Lower it (less wind resistance) search the forums for TT lowering
