I have thought long and hard but I can't decide where to put the lights on a first gen...on top of the bumper or underneath the bumper.... where have you all got them?? I need ideas.

I always like them mounted unfer the bumper...

Mine are under the bumper. I cut holes in the lower valance for them.

interesting....what types are we talking about. I just started looking at the different types and...wow make my head spin...what are the best and worst and why. Once I install them it is forever so I want to be sure about the style and type and functionality. After all it is my baby were talking about :D

The lower you can mount the fog lights, the better they function.

Good luck ....

Depends on your style of offroading. If they hang low, you risk taking them out with a rock, log, or even a high curb. Personal preference always counts, but Al is right about the lower performs better thing. I have my mounted inside the cutouts on the bumper. That way they are low, but also protected, unless I smash my bumper really good.

If you look underneath your bumper you will see bolts under there. I think there are 5 I could be wrong. What i did was i took out 2 of those bolts and i actually used those bolts to hold my fog lights

i'd cut holes and put them in the valance, it will look the best. if you really want to spend the money, get PIAAs lights

also are you wanting FOG lights or just extra driving lights...
most people call the extra driving lights Fog lights.

Back in the day when it was cool to cruise with just the driving lights or fog lights as some call them on and the parking lights this was badk in the mid to late 80's when i was a young teen...the popular brand was HELLA not sure if they even make lights any more they were one of the best and most reliable ones back then...
also today i think they are not as good as most are so tiny and every shape possible,,

I found a 1992 OEM "dealer option" kit on eBay-- I've seen them there once in a while. They go for about $100 and are very well built (by Bosch I think), they have a good wiring harness and an OEM-style switch. They function very well, but I also like the appearance-- they are rectangular and have a lens that matches the OEM headlights. The downside, of course, is that you can't always find them-- I've seen three sets go up for auction in the last year.

Whatever you get, I'd recommend rectangular shaped lights mounted in the lower valance.

BTW, fog lights, as opposed to driving lights are great to fill in that dark area the first gens have right in front of you. At 30 MPH and up, the extra visibility may not help you avoid anything that comes into the road, but they make a big difference on a dark, foggy highway when it helps to be able to see the lines on the road.

I have a 97 and i bought a pair of Hella 1500's for about $40 US/ 60 CAD and put them inside of the bumper in the center opening one either side of the front license plate holder. The lights are small enough that they fit in the opening and only stick out a 1/2 inch. I could have put them deeper but it would not have limited adjustment.

I cut a hockey puck in half to make two lifts for the brakets and it worked out exactly the right height when placed inside the bumper to use the stock mounts that come with the lights.

http://www.levineautoparts.com/helop15round.html - is a supplier and they are at $40 US now, but you can get them locally for the same price I am sure. Makes a huge difference off and on road at night though.

I realize your post is from February so you may already be done, but this worked well for me, and wanted to bring it up if you had not got to it yet. - Another tip on my 97 the daytime ligths are on the highbeam circuit so if you wire the lights to the highbeams you will have them on whenever you don't have lights turned on. I recommend putting it to your high beams anyway but getting a lighted switch to remind you because sometimes at night in the city I end up driving around with my driving lights on until someone gives me the high beams.

Up top is more functional and better looking for off road. Less shadows the higher you go. Plus the mudd and snow would cover them or knock them out of adjustment, or destroy them. The only ones that look good undernieth are smaller round or oval lights. More for street.
