Where to start on an unknown AT transmission??

OK I just bought this none running 92. Here is the story. I bought this from a kid who apparently had his transmission go out. Well he and his backyard mechanic buddy bought a transmission from the Junkyard. ( the transmission must be good right?? if the someone was able to wreck the car) Anyway after installing the transmission the car stopped running.( before the transmission was even tested) They decided the fuel pump had gone bad and that was enough and placed the truck on craigslist.
Thats where I come in the picture I bought the car not running. ( it looks real good for a 92 and 2 doors are hard to find and of course the price was right). OK so I hauled it home and got to work. The ECC fuse ended up being blown so now the truck starts up and runs pretty well. BUT the thing only has reverse. I see many signs of shoddy work under the car like only one bolt in the transmission mount. Can someone give me a list of things to check before I pull the transmission back out to get it rebuilt?? Missing bolts missing bolts missing bolts! Check for those! The transmissions have a few that are hard to reach and there might be other missing hardware.

Check that the transmission has enough fluid; if you've only got reverse, check the level. Too low and it won't engage forward gears. Also check that the shift linkage is adjusted properly and not just hashed together.

On a side note, you may need to change the speedometer drive gear to have an accurate speedometer reading; the junkyard donor may have had a different axle ratio than your Explorer.

Also now that I think about it, a blown EEC fuse is weird. So look for ghetto-rigged wiring anywhere....

Thanks for the reply. I am in the middle of taking the tranny out right now. So much is half done that it is not even funny.
