2002 Ford Explorer EB
Hello all. I recently purchased a 2002 Eddie B edition explorer. My wife and i got it for a decent price and its in great shape with alot of options. I bought it knowing a few issues ( Front wheel Hub issues, possible rear hub/whine) which i planned on taking care of sooner or later as they are not that bad. But i have started noticing the transmission slip. Seems like 2-3 and sometimes 4-5. I have read that there is a common issue with bore holes as well as solenoid packs. Just wondering how i can determine what needs done without ending up rebuilding. I would say im handy with tools and have done some jobs but never a transmission. Thanks for any and all help.

Do a search for " 5R55W/S servo bore fix" - enlightening.

You can likely fix this for about $235 - the price of the servo bore kit (plus pliers). I would suggest dropping the pan and taking a good look at the fluid and muck in the pan first. Change the filter. Pump 6 quarts of Mercon 5 back into it. If the tranny is otherwise healthy, then it is a good candidate for the fix. If the oil is burned or there is 1/4" of friction plate material goo in the bottom of the pan, you might start looking for a rebuilt unit.

Great! That was a perfect answer if there ever could be one. Is their possibly a write up on removal of pain and such?
