Well, long story short, I pulled the rear brakes apart on my '98 Sport, and discovered that in addition to the pads and rotors being thrashed, the shoes on the parking brakes were completely non-existant. I'm not talking about 'worn out' , I mean, not there!!! Well, technically the shoe's backing plate was there, but the friction material was completely gone. I've never seen a parking brake do that from LACK of use, LOL!!!

Has anyone else ever come across that?

The long story is that they had been making some slight noise for the last year. Every tire rotation (i.e. every other month) I was inspecting them myself making sure everything was OK. Everything seemed to be in place every time, so I've just lived with it. Then, on the way to work yesterday, some moron in front of me decided that I was following too close (which, for the record, I wasn't) and instead of tapping his brakes, he stabbed 'em, which, of course, means I stabbed mine, at which point the inboard rear pads on BOTH sides vaporized. Rivits to rotors don't make for nice sounds from the brakes.

Needless to say, the snowball started the avalanche!!! I need new pads and rotors on the rear. OK, I can live with that. While I'm doing it, the fronts are due in short-order anyways, so I figure I'll do those as well. Since I'm going to be in there anyways, I may as well do the brake hoses as they're almost 8 years old with 97k on them, so how much life could they have left? Since I'm doing the pads and hoses, new (rebuilt) calipers are only another $16 per corner, so what the hay? That'll leave me with all new parts from the hoses out, right? (All with a lifetime guarantee, of course)

Well, I also discovered that I need the parking brake shoes too.... that also means new hardware. The easiest way to replace the parking brakes is to pull the axle shafts, so there goes three more quarts of synthetic gear lube down the oil pan drain.

Then, since I've got to pull the axle shafts anyways, may as well replace the axle shaft seals while I'm in there. The bearings felt great, so there's no need to monkey-around with them, I guess.

Oh, and to do all this, I needed some tools: Tube nut wrenches, a second set of jack stands, a spring puller, a 1/2" breaker bar, a couple of adapters, a MityVac bleeder kit..... so $250 lighter, I left Sears.

All this because of the freakin' brake pads!!! I'm almost ready to buy an air compressor and air ratchet.... almost, but not quite.

Oh, yeah, I'm sure it can be done that way, but like I said, it's a lot easier with no axle flanges to wrestle around, and it's only a few more bolts. Heck, once I'm that far into it, there isn't much else I can do! (Except maybe a locker..... Doggone it!! I know I shouldn't have opened the diff!!!!)

I just pulled the rotor and all was good.

Not sure how stoping quick finely took out your parking brake. But ill just assumed that you hit the brakes + the parking brakes. Your a multi-talented person then. There been a few times when I wished I could hit both brakes at the same time.

Anyways good luck on your brake job. BTW, what new brake pads did you go with? I personaly went with the wagner themo quiet and love them.

The hard stop didn't take out the parking brakes, it took out the inner pad on the caliper. That's what prompted me to pull the rotor off, which is where i discovered the lack of friction material on the e-brake shoes.

The pads come with the loaded calipers, and they're just CarQuest's generic brand. I've had pretty good luck with them on a few other vehicles, so I'm comfortable using them. (They're also on my F-150 currently, I used them on my '93 Probe GT and my '93 Ranger a while back too) I believe they are just re-branded Wagner parts, but I could be wrong. The calipers are rebuilt OEM Bendix calipers, so I'm not too concerned.

I'm confused - how can your rear pads vaporize after one stabbing of the brakes? It would seem that they needed replacement anyway.

Hmmm I def. missed doing the parking brake when I did my brakes...

I checked them at the last tire rotation last month and they were getting close, but were wearing evenly and had probably 10k of life left in 'em (or so I thought).... When I took them apart, one side was only rubbing one rivit, the other side was right down to the bare metal. The wear indicators that are supposed to squeal when you get close were, of course, nowhere to be found.

I couldn't find anyone who sold the shoes. Theoretically they should last forever if you only use the parking brake when you are stopped. IMO they are a stupid design that results in more expensive rotor replacement (because they have the drums on the inside of the disk). My parking brake sucks (the truck still rolls forward / backward) so I guess I need the shoes as well.

Anyone know where they sell them other than the dealer?

I never understood how parking brake shoes can get worn out. Can someone explain this???

why they wear out... someone had the brake on at one point of time while driving

As for replacement... Oriellys (SP?) Wagner themo quiet

Improper adjustment so they drag while driving, a cable that hangs up when you release them, or a complete lack of use can all cause the shoes to not work when they're needed.

Got mine all back together yesterday, but the driver's side parking brake actuator lever in the backing plate is frozen up. I even tried banging it forwards and back with a 4-lb baby sledge hammer, and she won't move. Looks like it might be time for a trip to the stealership, which probably means another $50 worth of Mobil-1 down the drain.

On top of all that, I can't get the things to bleed all the air out either. With the engine off and no vacuum assist, everything feels pretty good, but when you start it up and let it idle, the pedal goes more than halfway down before you get a firm feel. That tells me there's still some air in there somewhere. :( :(

This almost would have been worth the $1600 Midas wanted!!
