Being new to the Explorer ownership world I didn't notice this until recently but my 1999 Explorer Sport has no lock on the glovebox door...I have read through the owners manual and service manual and they don't mention it either...

Did a certain trim level come with a lock there and/or can a lock be fitted to the existing door?

My GF's 95 sport had a locking glove compartment, used the same key as the doors & ignition and it was just the base one I think. Might have been a dealer option??

I don't recall seeing one on mine... But I could see a practical use for them... For example, 'transporting a pistol in a locked compartment inaccessable to the driver' for one... It meets the definition of a 'locked compartment' and would be inaccessible to the driver if it's locked and uses the ignition key. Might be the only viable choice for an SUV...

I can confirm there's no glove box lock on a 99 XL. Don't know if it was optional or available on the upper trim levels.

My 89 Vic had one. It was all plastic, and could easily be broken by an unscrupulous individual. It broke once on its own, anyway, and had to be replaced.

Never seen one on '93, '97, '00 (all Sports) or my current '99 (Eddie Bauer).

I wish it was an option. I can think if times I wish I had it.

my first gens all had one, although the lock was pretty worthless. My 99 mounty and 96 xl do not have a lock

Come to think of it, my '93 probably did have a lock. It's been so long since I drove it. I bought it from the factory in spring of '93, drove it through the summer and then moved out of the country in early Fall. It went into storage for a year before I sold it to a friend. As much as I loved that Sport, I didn't get a lot of miles on it.

First thing I did when I got back to Canada in '97? Scored a '97 Sport. :D

My '94 has a lock, it's plastic and worthless though. In fact the pin that holds it in broke and it fell out one day. I put it back in and it stayed but it's not right. And for some reason originally my ignition and door key were the same key and the other key did nothing but unlock the worthless glovebox...never quite understood that.

My 98 XLT does not have a lock.

It holds my owner's manual and a tire gauge. I do keep a map leading to the Holly Grail and Ark of the Covenant in the jack compartment...but that's a secret...

Even my '00 LIMITED does not have a locking glove box. Probably phased out when they changed over to the 2nd gen? My old '94 had one, albeit it's like putting a padlock on swiss cheese.

My '95 Limited came with a locking glove box on the passenger side and unlocked box in the console.
