Ok, so I heard a Ranger today with a dual exhaust and it sounded great, and I want mine to sound "great" also. Anyways, I want to have a single in dual out muffler, I don't want it terribly loud with people being able to hear it from a mile away, but I still want it to cath people's attention. I was thinking maybe putting 2 Borla tips coming out right next to each other out the rear, kinda liek their dual tips look like although mine would actually be two pipes. Either that or have them coming out at the corners of the bumper, if this, then some slanted tips. Will a body lift make the exhaust look lower? Should I have the guy raise the pipes to the height of the bumper? I have a glasspack, and haven't been too happy with it, I get some compliments, but to me it sounds too high pitched. Oh yeah about the muffler, I would like to be pretty deep and throaty. About the tips, which one do you think would look better? I think they would be able to do it easier if itwere to come out of the back of the bumper, but I think I would rather have it coming out the corners, and it would be cheaper thna buying to borla tips, which cost $35 each. Thanks for any suggestions

I have a Flowmaster (dual chamber) with 2 1/2" piping and it's loud as hell. So whatever you do, I suggest staying away from this muffler. At half throttle, you can probably hear it 2-3 blocks away. Also, at certain amounts of throttle, there's a flat spot in the roar.

91Explorer,
Do you have two pipes coming out or just one. I want my Explorer to be "loud as hell" like yours!!!!

Mufflers

hey rock, if ya want a nice deep throaty sound, I would reccomend a Gibson or a Borla muffler...have ya thought about getting a cat-back, check out the thread on Borla cat-backs for $165.00. I just ordered mine today. Not sure if it will fit your Explorer. Check out that thread if want the details! Good luck!!!

It won't fit mine. IS the Gibson any good? I would go with a cat-back, but I want dual exhaust. I was thinking either the 40 series Delta Flow flwmaster, or the 50 series either delta flow or regular. Thanks

I heard and saw a guy with a 91-94 XLT the other day with what looked like a Borla cat-back, it was definitly a Borla system though. He had dual exit out the back with either a dual tip or two pipes next to each other and it was the common Borla tip. It looked really nice and sounded beefy. I personally have never heard an Explorer with Flows but I am changing my mind and getting Borla in about two weeks. Hope this helps. I would also like to get everyone's opinion on tips, rolled tips, slanted, chrome, ect. and what would look like as a dual exit by the liscense plate.

Go Gibson for Deep, Throaty and pocket book!

Rock883:

I just had a Gibson Cat-Back "single-out-the-back" installed on my '98 5.0 liter Explorer and it sounds awesome; much quieter than the Flowmaster and noticeable performance pickup with a K&N filter on the intake. Gibson also makes 2 different "dual" designs; price includes some nice chrome too.
Their website is: <www.gibsonperformance.com>

Good luck!....Hornet

CAsplorin,

I have a single pipe going in and coming out of the muffler. 2 1/2" piping from the cat back and no resonator.

I would stay away from this, but if you want loud, I guess this is the way to go. Just watch out for cops that hate loud exhaust systems (like my area S.F. Ca).

I'm not so sure if borla or gibson make dual outlet rear exhaust fot 91-94 explorers, but if anyone knows for sure please let me know. i know flowmaster does for sure with dual 3" tips (rounded), and with a 40 series muffler it sounds loud and deep, which is what im ordering for my 91. that and a KKM tru-rev, jet chip, borla headers, and a mass air flow sensor. it should have a little kick after this.
about 50-75 bolt on hp, and a nice deep smooth sound.

Most companies don't make a specific exhaust system with dual exits for Explorers but you can a 40 series muffler with a single inlet and a dual outlet and it will fit. I am going to get either a Borla (prefferably) or a 40 series with a single inlet and a dual outlet to dual tips by the liscense plate. I will post pics after I get it done.

I went with 2.5" alum-steel single tube and a Flo-Pro Performance muffler. I also added a 3" chrome tip. I chose the Flo-Pro because it's a heavy gauge aluminized steel welded design instead of that locked seam.
One thing to keep in mind is dual pipes do add some extra weight and one 2.75 tube passes about the same volume of air as two 2" tubes.

Anyway if you like a deep warm sound without waking up the neighbors kind of deal this is a good choice. My best friend has a Gibson cat back on his 97 and it's higher in pitch, and a little louder at highway speeds. I prefer the lower rumble of mine.

I paid $185 for the Flo-pro at Mach 1 Muffler, the alum-steel pipe and chrome installed, including tax.

Good luck!

Rock-

Check out my website, I had a muffler shop rig up a dual out cat system for me with a Flowmaster 50 and oval ended SS tips. I think its sort of what you are looking for. It might take a bit for the pics to load, so be patient. See ya.

Yeah, I have seen it, I love it!! I want something similar, though I am thinking some tips coming out at the corners of the bumper, slanted down like stock, in a dual forat, or some 3" slanted tips out the sides of the bumper. How does that 50 sound? I don't want the 40, way too loud, and the 30 is quieter than the 50 isnt it? So I think the 50 would be for me. ISn't there a few different 50's? Which one? Thanks

Rock-
OK, I got you. Ya, I think that would be a great look! As for the 50, I don't know what your tastes are but I think its what you are looking for. Yes, the 30 and the 70 are quiter but not loud enough (for me). I've got the 50 with the dual in/out configuration. I was aware of the cabin sound the first few days, I doubted whether or not I had made the right choice, but it was funny because after those first few days, I felt very comfortable with the sound. It has a really nice rumble that isn't obnoxious unless you floor it off the line (and sometimes that's a good sound too). I think I was over-sensitive to the sound at first because I had never had a high flow muffler before. My doubts have long passed and I feel I made the right choice. It has a good sound. As my pal, Charger1 says, "Wow, it sounds like a truck should.". Also, as far as the cabin sound goes, my kid sleeps just fine in his baby seat :)

I have a 91 Expl. 4L. For my exhaust i took
my muffler off and relpace it with a straight pipe.
You have a nice sound, you are still legal, and it's
cheap. If you replace the hole pipe it will last youm
for a long time. And it will not effect the computer.
But if you pull a trailer it will get loud; not for
me.
