i cant help ya man

i dont think it is the aod..... explorers didnt come with an aod... but the did come with a derivitive of the aod....

im not a transmission guy, and i didnt want to leave him hangin:)

This is what I got from fram.com for my truck:
Transmission - Filter FRAM FT1115A 2WD A4LD

I was in fact given this when I bought it:
Transmission - Filter FRAM FT1167 4WD 4R70W

So it looks like I will have to take it back.

So it looks like I have a A4LD.

i dont know if im right, but i thought the a4ld sucked so much they stopped using it in the 2nd gen ones. ive got a 5r55e or whatever that one is and i got a 97 4dr 2wd, so i think you have the 4r70w, or the 4r44e (or something to that nature), or the one that you said came with your truck.

I have a 97 Explorer Sport 2wd 2door so it may be different between mine and your 4-door XLT.

Just going by what fram.com says there is only one choice and that is the A4LD for a 2wd.

"I was in fact given this when I bought it:
Transmission - Filter FRAM FT1167 4WD 4R70W"

Yea, the 4R70W is the V8 tranny.

Robb

If you have a Sport.. you don't have the 4R70W. That's the V8 tranny. fram.com told you thats what the 4WDs have?!

EDIT: You beat me, Robb. Have any recent pics of your SAS in progress?

Yup, that is correct. That is exactly what fram.com said.

All '97-'01 (including '02 Sports) with either V6 have the 5R55E when equipped with an automatic. The V8 is the only Explorer to use the 4R70W. The ALD4 hasn't been used since '94. The 4R55E was used on the V6 Explorers in '95 & '96. You can use the filter for the 5R55E in any of the V6 Explorer transmissions, but you can't necessarily use the Al4D filter in the 5R55E (it likely won't have the updates).

Get a filter for a 5R55E for your '97 OHV.

hte answer to this question is none of the above.
what kind of tranny do you have?

the correct answer is a crappy ford one hehehehehehe man what were they thinkin when they designed the crappy explorer tranny?! :)

Diff Question

Potentially stupid question(s): What's the difference between Limited and Conventional Slip differentials? Which is better to have in any situation? I just ran out and checked my Trans and Axle Codes and I checked them acording to the Tranny and Axle chart I have an A4LD with a 3.73 Limited Slip differential. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to have that over the conventional differentials or different geared (like 4.10) diffs?

Limited slip will transfer an (obviously) limited amount of power to the wheel with greater resistance in the event that one wheel begins to slip. Conventional ('open') diffs transfer all the power to the wheel of least resistance (and therfore lowest traction). The opinions on LSDs tend to differ... but I mostly hear of people saying they aren't worth it.
Gear ratios will affect most noticably your power, rpms, and gas milage. Lower (numeric) ratios, such as those in the 3's, will have less power to the wheels, but on the highway their rpms will be noticably lower than those of us with high (numeric) gears... those in the 4's (4.10s... etc). A higher gear number will provide lots of low-end power (torque?), you'll jump off the line faster than a ricer, and pull stumps like there is no tomorrow... but you'll pay when you hit the highway, burning extra gas and revving a bit more. Obviously this is over-glamourized, you can still pull stumps if you dont have 4.10s... it's only going to be somewhat harder.

I hope this helps a little bit... my knowledge is limited on this
