First off, Hi to everyone and thanks in advance. I have a 2003 Explorer with a whin and thumping when I start to decel. When it comes to a stop and start up again the noise and thumping is gone until I start to decel again. I have replaced the transfer case (used), new front drive shaft, both side CV joints, and checked the front differential (found no obvious damage), also replaced both front hub & bearing assy's. Any suggestions. Thanks

Bump for ya...

After all the work and expense I found that the rear tires were an 1 1/2 inch bigger. This caused the T/C to try to engage. Replaced all 4 tires at tire dealers expense and the noise and thumping are gone.

I have the exact same problem as you Modfan. So far I have only changed both front bearing/hubs but today found out that my rear tires are about 1" larger that the front. They are all the same nominal size, but different brand... so I guess I'll have to change the tires.

I will upgrade the tires though... to 255/70 R16 as i find the Explorer lacks grip, especially on turns; I also have a Nissan Xterra on 265/70/16 and it feels glued to the ground compared to the Explorer.

Thanks for updating your situation!
