Whine during coast

I had this happen to me when I added a locker in the rear. If you take out the rear diff. carrier it my be the taper roller bearings. Mine were destroyed after a few months with an aussie locker. I did gears and new bearings, no more problems since.

Wow, I couldnt have found a better thread at the right time! I just started having the same problems, that is when I let off the gas, such as getting off the highway, I get that dreaded VERY loud high pitched whine! Sort of like you get when you accidently try to put a manual trans in reverse while moving. I was also leaning towards the transfer case being the culpret as I have been getting some 4X4 codes flashed at me. I also pulled the front drive shaft but that didn't help. So, I guess i'll be pulling a t-case this weekend. Oh yeh, my 97' exploder has 230,000 untouched miles on it so I guess it was time for something to go bad.

My '95 (245,000mi) just started doing the same thing. I'm thinking about replacing with a used unit. Not sure if I want to do it myself in the driveway or pay a shop a couple hundred. How bad of a job is it? I think the labor estimate is about 2.5 hours, does this sound right?

Thanks

one thing u dont want to ever do,, do not, dont, abstain from driving your wifes car till it gets a whine or clunk, clank,, pull a driveshaft and give it back to her,, dont do it,, thats a suervival trait, u ignore these pearls of wisdom and your forehead will git a soft mushy state with lodge premium iron skillet tattooed backwards across your forhead, dont give her car back whing or clanking, u will most likely wind up buying her a new one with most if not all the premium accesserioes including heated leather seat covers with auto massage,,,,
