OK so judging from my last thread i am not really expecting to get much feed back from here.. Looks like there are a lot of traffic around here just limited responses.

Well anyways, when ever i start my ex up i hear a whining scream type sound from under the car. I was wondering if anyone here know where that would be coming from. Its weird and i have no idea where its coming from.

get under the truck or have someone get under it while you start it up to try tp pin point where the noise is coming from. You might want to take off you surpentien belt, start it up and if the noise isnt their with the belt off you either need a new belt (depending on how worn it looks) or a new belt tensioner. Both are inexpensive items.

Its NOT coming from the engine compartment. Its more like in the cabin. I havent had a chance to get under it but i will try to do this asap. (noticed it yesterday and it was snowing out).

The belt is the first thing i thought of.

my 96 has a similar problem. when it is running there is a humming/whining noise. Although I know mine is coming from under the hood and I am pretty sure it is either the alternator or the tensioner. Now all I have to do is get the money to replace both. Good luck with it.

You may not get responses because your essentially asking: There's a noise coming from my truck, what is it?

Noises can be hard to locate but you'll never find it asking here you'll have to crawl underneath, around, on, etc until you can atleast pinpoint the location.

I know. I am going to get under the truck i was just wondering if any one else had a simular issue. There is no way you guys are going to be able to tell me exactly what it is but i just wanted ideas until i actually get under the truck. With the snow out right now i would have to find a dry snow free spot which is hard being that i dont have an indoor garage.

Hah that's my problem. I've got so much to do to all of my cars and I don't feel like laying in salt and wet.

ok so apparently the whining noise is coming from the gas tank. A guy that took a quick look at it said it sounds like the fuel pump is whats making the noise.
Is this problem common?

It is a problem, thats for sure. If it is indeed your fuel pump whining loud. The fuel pump is no fun, and is very expensive to have done in a shop. I was curious one day and called around for estimates. The cheapest I could find was over $800. I had one at $1200. The tank has to be dropped and the pump taken out from the top. Doing this yourself will save you a lot of green. You have to make sure, no matter who does it, to get the right pump. There are different fuel pumps, and you need to remove yours first, before you buy a new one, to compare. Good luck, which ever way you go.

in otherwords motorcraft parts.

thanks for you quick reply. I actually have some one who will change the pump for about 75 bucks. its a friend of a friend.
But i think that more importantly is how do i know if its actually the fuel pump? i dont want to change it if its not whats bad.

you can try checking the fuel pressure, if its low more than likely it could be the pump. if you dont have a fuel pressure gauge, go to a local parts store and you should be able to find one

doesnt the whinning noise mean like u have no power steering or am i wrong on this.

As i stated above it wasnt coming from the engine compartment, but from the gas tank.
