whining under the hood

I honestly did some research, but most of the "same" issues were when the vechile was in gear/motion. My whine/whistle is light, appears to be coming from under the hood and does it in motion and while in park and giving gas. I just did a minor tune -up, so I checked to be sure I didn't inadvertently knock off a vac line and I didn't. Water pump? I'm kinda at a loss here. She's got 200K on her and all original, no mods.

you've most likely have a bearing going south in something. if you can't narrow down which one by listing, i'd start be removing the serpentine belt and running the engine (for no more than a minute) to see if the noise goes away. if it does, try spinning everything by hand to see if you can feel one that doesn't feel right. likey suspects are the alternator or power steering pump.

i would bet on the power steering pump,, almost every Explorer i see has the same noises,, one being the pump,, especially in the cold,,

Check your voltage levels and see if the alternator is up to par. Those whine when they are going.

all pulleys seem good, no play. Alt volt checked out. I did notice the whine goes away once the vehicle is up to speed.

My PS pump whines occasionally at low speed...

I have a slight kink in the hose from the reservoir to the pump. i believe that occasionally the flow isn't catching up to the demand of the pump.

pretty sure it's power steering pump related, as it goes away once warm and at speed. a lot of Ford P/S pumps make noise.

After removing the belt to check the pulleys, etc. I, of course put the belt back on, and no more whine. :scratch:

could have just been how the belt was sitting, maybe it was touching something until the rubber warmed up a bit.
