I'm thinking of ways to improve the look of my tail lights, because my blackouts really aren't cutting it. The Expedition pictured below gave me an idea that I think is worth trying. I want to get clear tails, and then color match some slotted taillight covers and put them on the clears.

I DO NOT want to use the cheap looking slotted tail light covers that are sold at Wal-Mart, etc. With that being said, I was on the highway the other day and I saw some really classy taillight covers (kinda like the ones pictured below) that have about 5 or 6 horizontal slots on them. These tail light covers would be perfect for my project, but I've searched high and low and I cannot figure out who makes these. I hope I described these suckers enough so that someone can identify them. :)

BTW, doesn't this Exped look awesome!?

does the site say those are covers? because those honestly look like part of the car.

I know for a fact that those are tail light covers because a customer at my work at the very same ones. These here are just color matched so they blend in with the body.

The brand of the tail light covers is not listed.

what about getting regular covers and painting them to match your explorer?

you can get the same color paint and clearcoat them so thye look like part of the vehicle.

those do look pretty damn good though

check out a company named vtech I think they make em!! good luck

 :shoot:

EDIT: I just glanced at the pic and then replied. Those may be covers, and probably are if you have seen them in person though. I still stick with the (origional) following statement though as you can get the same look (if not better):

Those are painted clears. Just your basic clear tail light, but they taped it off and painted the desired areas to match the body. Done alot, but makes for a great looking affect.

They are NOT painted clears! I've seen these covers before in person. I don't want to get clears and them paint them with that candy apple red stuff, I don't like that look.

Leenjen, my tail light covers are already black, and if I painted them black again they'd be even more illegal than they are now because the light would not show thru them.

93BLUEXLT, it could be them, I'll check it out. Thanks.

Those are definatly covers

I have seen these same covers before and they are not some clears just painted.:p

Hartman

I did some searching thru my magazines and I found some that are very similar to the ones you have pictured here and they sell them at

Sure enough, they have them there. THANKS for your help! :D

Glad I could help

Not a problem, glad I could help a fellow X owner on this awesome website.:chug:

ooooooo...ouch, sorry guys. Didn't mean to hurt anyones feelings. Unless you didn't notice I edited my post right after I posted it saying that they probably are covers. The only reason I didn't get tird of my origional statement was b/c a simmilar (and sometimes better) affect can be acheieved by painting. I know alot of people that have done it and had excelent results. And what the heck were you talking about "paint them with that candy aple red stuff," you lost me there. Guess I'm gonna stay out of this one....

GodFather

I did not know that you could get the same effect by painting as well, That is cool and would be cheaper as well. THanks for the info. The only bad thing about that is its permanent and if you dont like it that means new tail lights or put the originals back on:D

Some people buy clear tails and get some translucent Candy Apple Red model paint and paint the top half of the lens so that it lights up red, thus being legal.

I do not want to paint the clears just for the reason that bigbadfred mentioned, because I want the effect to be reversable in case I change my mind. ;)

Oh, I got ya. You were not talking about matching the body color like I was. Sorry, I miss read that. There is a big difference between "candy" paint and translucent paint...but that is a whole other discussion. I do agree that if you don't want it to be final I would not paint them.

Im glad i read this post:

I want all clears not altezza even though they are illegal, but i could take a peice of laminating tape and stick it on and paint a red circle on it so if i will be driving alot in town there the cops are i can make it look legal but then if i want it to be back to all clear i can peel the tape off and stick it on later again. Sounds like alot of work and probably wouldnt work but it might.
