Guys..I have a 2001 Sport.Typical 4.0L motor. My question is why are there 3 different oil filters listed for this motor? The last two times I purchased a filter the parts guy gave me the wrong one. This happened at two different parts stores. Were there design changes during the model year?

Here's what I know. The SOHC uses the same oil filter as the OHV. The motorcraft part number is FL-1A. So if you go with the motorcraft you should have no problems. BTW, the motorcraft filter is as good (or better) than any other oil filter. Good luck.

Yep, I use motorcraft filters all the time. Maybe the parts guy is just screwing up.

First time I am using Motorcraft FL-1A with all the talk of how bad Fram filters are. The part number for Fram is PH-8A, by the way. I will check tomorrow morning if there is any difference at start up between the Motorcraft and Fram. I normally get some tapping sound at start up. If it disappears tomorrow morning then it is the Fram. We'll see.

I 've done a little research on these filters. There are two different filters for the 01' 4.0L motor. There is the FL1 and the FL 820.The FL1 is for the 3/4 thread, the FL820 is for the 22mm thread. This is the problem I've been having.I need the FL 820 which is a much smaller filter and has a different thread design. Why the change..who knows.I looked up the 02' 4.0 and it doesn't even list the FL 1 filter, only the 820.So there has been a change. Thanks for the replies.

That's odd, the FL-820 is the one my Wife's '93 Mercury Sable (3.8L) uses. And, you are right, it is much smaller than the FL-1A that my '97 SOHC Explorer uses.

How are Fram filters bad? That's the first time I've heard that. I thought Fram was supposed to be some of the best?

02' Explorer Sport uses the Fram PH 2. Where do yall find the Motorcraft brand, aside from a Ford House.

Don't laugh.....but Wal-Mart (at least the one near me) carries a few Motorcraft oil filters including the FL-1A. Might want to check there and see if your local Wally World carries them.

My local Wally World is why I got my Concealed Handgun License.

I ran into the same problem with my 01 4x4 sprt. had to take the old filter in to store to get the right one cuz napa book shows two threads, found out later it depends if u have a oil cooler or not.
