Why is the part number the same for most 4.0

just wondering if you look up the starter for a 99 it has the same part number as an 02 or 03....same goes for the ranger ...does this mean the starters are interchangeable through the years? ....need a starter for 02 xls and planning to go to scrap yard....i checked more then one website and they all had same part number(s)

The junk yard should have a cross reference book to look up what parts will interchange.

I'm using a '92 4.0l OHV starter on my '01 SOHC swap in my '95 explorer. IIRC, you have 2 choices for starters... Auto or manual trans.

I rebuilt transmission for quite a few years...from what I remember all 4.0 automatic starts are the same.
