Okay so when the transmission shifts up and i put acceleration and strain through the lower rpm's like 1-3 thousand, mainly when it shifts to over drive and their is strain(my O/D kicks in about 45-50), i hear this weird sound like a spitting/rattling kind of sound coming from the engine, almost in front of where i sit like brake booster area, but i just fixed that vacuum leak, and its always been doing this but didnt think much of it. Anyone got any idea what this could be?

It sounds like the engine is pinging. This is also called pre-ignition and is very common on Explorers. Do a search for pinging, there are many causes for it. It is most commonly caused by a lean condition though, so look to make sure there are no vacuum leaks anywhere.

If that rattling sound sounds like metal on metal, look for a loose heatshield on the exhaust system. I ended up having to cut one off during a transmission fluid change and the rattle I had is now gone.

alright sorry guys i was kind of vague in my description. But if u roll down the window u can hear it better, and i would better describe as a gurgling spitting rattling sound.

i think i know what he is talking about, mine does the same thing.

it happens whenever you accelerate really hard or punch it, my descriptino is of a bunch of pennies being shaken in a soda can

yea that would be a pretty good description

so does anybody know what the hell this sound is?

weird noise

I have this as well, only happens in gear while driving, I'm going to tie up all the heat shields on the exhaust and see what happens. I mean if it only rattles at a certain RPM range (I cannot get it to do it while parked, even in gear) it must mean a loose part.

Same thing over here on my 93. I've carbon busted the engine, cleaned the MAF, checked for vaccum and intake manifold leaks, and welded any loose heat shields. Still got the noise. I have noticed the noise went away when using higher octane fuel, but Ford advises highly against that as it will build carbon in your engine faster and cause knocking. I'm on the quest right now to figure out what's going on, a few new ideas I've found advice such as simply changing the spark plugs, but making sure to only use Motorcraft or Autolite double platinum or iridium plugs IN THE CORRECT HEAT RANGE. This is my next step. If this doesn't solve it I plan to check into the timing and octane adjustment plug which manages pre-ignition.

Removed the octane plug/shorting pin. It helped a little bit but the ping came back still here and there, it only occurred about 15% of the time compared to how often it used to occur and in a lot quiter way. Plan to do the spark plugs next, and instead go a heat range cooler. If all else fails I will have to buck up and check the timing. I've found you can also check the vacuum modulator on the tranny and if it leaks oil it needs to be replaced and possibly the diaphram as well.

fixed!!

After living with this stupid noise for 3 years, it was a combination of 2 things:

1. pinhole in muffler (short whistling/poor idle)
2. rockshields top and bottom on muffler (rattling on acceleration)

found pinhole by putting hand over exhaust exit (try when cold!) whistled constantly. then went to replace muffler, tapped on shields, and they both rattled. took off shields, found pinhole (start truck again, put hand on exhaust exit) welded shut. Done

I'm not sure what mine was... but it seems to have gone away.. Knowing what I know now, I'm thinking it was some valve rattle, cause it ONLY HAPPENED when I punched it and it got to the 4-5k rpm mark, but I'm not positive. Meaning I'd be in 3rd or 4th gear, punch it, it'd drop to second and the rpms would go wild high, and I'd have the rattle.

The only thing I've done differently since then and it's gone away, was I've gone to Synthetic Oil and used a can of Seafoam through the engine using the vacuum method.

Fixed my rattle with the * Hose Clamp Fix*

I climbed under the passenger side, reached up and found the heat shield on the cat. The top part *seemed* to be loose and I could make a small sound. Undeterred, I went to the parts store and bought a pack of 2 / 4 or 5 inch hose clamps, hooked them together and, using my handy power tool, tightened up the clamp.

Test Drive. No noise, none, and I want to emphasize how much BETTER it sounded!

(make sure to roll in the one attached side about 5 inches BEFORE you wrap the clamp around or you may have too much to take up on the other end)

My self test did NOT conclude that the shield was very loose, but trusting this forum:thumbsup: i went ahead with the simple and cheap fix.

IF you hear a rattle, clanking, actually very LOUD "pennies in a can" sound, try this I did, and I lost 100 POUNDS IN 2 DAYS! (oops, wrong post...)

im having same issue. i deff have that stupid tick sound from the pushrods but i have the dimes in a beer bottle sound. however ive come across the octane booster and i unplugged it and the motor idled the same, didnt test drive it though. autozone does not sell it, where do i get it. also what heat range plugs should i use, i do run autolite. i live in arizona so its hot out, i run regular unleaded, and drive like 30 minutes to work and back, then an hour drive once during the weekend.
