Wierd question, can a remote key fob operate more than one vehicle?

Ok strange question, when i got my 2000 Explorer Sport the previous owners had lost the key fobs. I had one a dealer gave my dad when he got his 2004 Expedition (it was actually off an excursion or something), and had it programmed to his Expedition. Well I programmed it to my Explorer, and now both vehicles are reading off it (it was funny until i accidentally hit the panic button within 15ft of them both and couldn't get them to shut up lol ). So I'm assuming by this that the vehicles system only reads the code when you program it and does not replace the code within the fob itself?

You are correct. The vehicles RAP module receives the remotes code, so you can have 2 vehicles using the same remote. You should have been able to turn off the alarms on both vehicles with the remote.

The problem arises when both vehicles are parked side by side and, for whatever reason, one doesn't respond, but the other one does. For example, the panic alarm.. if you accidentally hit it, and only one goes off, then you hit it again, and the other goes off, but the first turns off.... you could spend all day doing that. Also, there's no way to unlock or lock only one of the vehicles at a time.

I wouldn't recommend it... it might seem like a convenience, but it turns out to be a royal pain in the butt in the long run!

Personally, I wish someone would invent a double-key fob for Fords. Take the guts out of two remotes and snap them into a double-sided housing. There's my million-dollar invention!

Of course, if you take all the possible combinations of remotes Ford makes, the combinations are staggering!

Maybe an adapter for the OEM fobs? Snap the top halves to an adapter ring? I dunno.... I guess for now, two separate fobs is good enough!

Something that is handy on any PATS equipped vehicles... double-cut the ignition key and use one key in two different vehicles. If you stick the key in and it doesn't work, flip it over and it will. I've never gotten around to doing that with mine, but it'd just be a matter of programming that key on both vehicles. Simple enough.
