Anyone out there getting there firestones replaced.....which one of those tires are you getting that they gave you to choose from. Can you take the 110 credit that they give you, and than add on like 200 out of your pocket to get some really nice tires?

You dont always have to get what they show you on that card, because alot of people have gotten BFGoodrich AT KO's, which arent listed, the only BFG tire offered on the card is the Longtrails. What we did was go to Sears and picked out the KO's and used the $400 credit to buy the tires, but the final cost came out around $450 for mounting and balancing, so we ended up paying only 50 dollars for a new set of tires. But we just walked into Sears and picked out the ones we wanted and showed them the recall papers and they were more than happy to sell them to us, and in about an hour we were on our way to the Firestone store to drop the old tires off.

How did you get that credit, did you just go to that ford dealership and tell them you were going somewhere else, and they gave you a credit.....I was looking at the General Grabber AT's they looked pretty decent, know anything about them?

i had those tires....good for street lousy for just about everything else

I just want those affected to know that i've gotten my tires replaced by my Ford dealership. I got the Michelin Cross Terrains after making a special request. These tires are SO much better than the Deathstones that they replaced!! At a market price of CDN$185/tire, i must say they're a damn good deal! I can now sleep in piece knowing that my family is in safer territory with these.......because so much is riding on these tires. :-)

Tire choice -- wet or light ice

i'm going to try to get my wilderness ATs replaced this week...i'll admit, I'm a bit of a wuss--my explorer might see a dirt road once a week--but it's more likely to see wet roads, or icy conditions. I was wondering if anybody had a preference for a better tire for these conditions.

( I did a 225 degree spin this past February on a frozen highway ---ending up backwards in a ditch at an angle-- departing controlled driving conditions at about 35 mph.)

Thanks---

Icy condition

If you are looking for winter tire, go for the Brigestone Winter Dueler. They have a directionnal tread that is good in snow and ice. since I had those I almost never use my 4x4 in winter, except when in deep snow that is.

I got Les Schwab's Wild Country...premium 8-ply light truck tire that comes already siped for ice (runs cooler in summer) 50K mile warranty, and dual water channels to throw out water...absolutely great tires. Much better ride and quieter than the Wilderness ATs they replaced.

Regardless, i think Winter tires are still the best for Winter. It's really hard to find an All-Season tire that's really good on ice. For winter conditions, what you really want are the small sipes that are built into the thread. Look at a winter tire and you'll know what i mean. Best solution, get an All-Season tire with lots of sipes, and take it easy in winter.

This is an example: Look closely and you'll see lines going across the rubber patches.

These two Michelin tires are listed on the approved list, but i think you can get whatever tires you want. I didn't have the cashflow, so decided to request for the Cross-Terrains from Ford. I got them, and i'm a happy camper.

Does anyone know if Ford will reimburse $110 for the spare as well?

I just got 4 new 275/55/17 Pirelli Scorpion Zeros and I hadn't decided what to do in regards to the spare. I was planning on just keeping the same spare in size 235-75-15.

Granted, that'd look pretty weird if I ever had to use it, but the wheel is pretty much the same diameter as the 275, so it shouldn't be a huge problem. I'm just curious if my Ford dealer will replace the spare for free, even though I went out and purchased replacements for the other 4 wheels.

as long as it is a wilderness AT and you follow all their instructions (bringing them the receipt and having the DOT code of the old Wilderness AT cut out and bringing that to them) they will reimburse you up to $110 for tire and neccessary procedures such as mounting

Word has it that if the spare isn't a Wilderness AT tire, or ATX, they won't replace it. I've still got my Firestone FR*** as a spare; they didn't touch it when i got my 4 new Cross-Terrains.

Thats correct it has to be a wilderness AT
When i had my tires replaced the first time when firestone recalled them they put a crap tire on there. Now i am going to have to pay for a spare this time. But life is tough

If you think about it, how often are we going to be riding on the spare anyway? Even if you do have a crappy Firestone down there, I can't imagine it logging more than a handful of miles in its lifetime.

I'll probably ask the dealer just to replace it, so that I can continue to do my part in ridding the world of Firestone Wilderness ATs. That is of course if it's an AT down there.

True.....that's why i didn't say anything when they didn't touch the spare. Besides....i pay my AA dues, so i can call a tow truck! Hehe.
