2001 Sport Trac
Hey Guys,
I have a question. My rear end took a crap in my 2001 Sport Trac and was wondering if a 2003 rear end from a ranger will work? My rear end is a D2 which I believe is a 8.8 4.10 and the ranger rear end is a R7 which also is a 8.8 4.10. (both are 4x4) Just wondering if this will bolt up to my truck? Please let me know.
Thanks
Steve

No. The Explorer 8.8 has the leaf springs under the axle. The Ranger's have the leaf springs over the axle.

Ok thanks! Know of anywhere to get a rear end for my truck?

As I recall, a Ranger axle is 1.5" narrower than a Sport Trac or Explorer axle and is a 28 spline unit instead of the stronger 31 spline found in Explorers and Tracs, besides which the spring perches are on the wrong side. A 95-02 Explorer rear is the same as a Sport Trac and there are plenty of them out there.

To get an exact match for his truck he needs a Sport Trac axle from a 2001 or 2002 model. All the Explorers from 1995 to 2001 and Sport Tracs from 2003 to 2005 have rear disc brakes. The 2001/2002 Sport Tracs have rear drum brakes.

They say if you change from drum to disc that the proportioning valve needs to be changed. And hopefully the emergency brake cable would match up too.
