my 4 wheel drive is out because my tcase is no longer working. Did the troubleshooting, thats what i came up with. I dont know what is wrong it in but it doesnt work I know that.

This guy is selling a tcase on craigslist saying it is a from a 2000 explorer, not used much and in good working condition. Hes asking 250 for it which i think is pretty high.

will this be compatible with a 2001 sport (4wd)?
any help is appreciated, thanks

You need to match the tags on the T-Case, and make sure your drive shafts hook up.

i assume the tags need to be the same?
anyone have an idea if the driveshafts will match?

SINCE you are in Maryland, visit one of the Crazy Ray's, there are Explorers everywhere since the Cash-For-Clunkers event sucked them all out of the highway. Anyway, a transfer case goes for $60:

yea crazy ray's is great i was just skeptical in spending $60 on a tcase that id have no idea if it would work.

Yes the tags should match, as far as drive shafts theres a U'bolt style and another not sure of the name. My 98 doesnt have the U-bolt style make sure the front drive shaft matches up to the T-case.

The chances are pretty good that itll work so I'd still take the $60 risk.

yea im gonna head down saturday get some tow hooks and a tcase. thanks for your guys help, ill let you know what i find

Not 100% but I thought I read on the forum here that the 01+ Sports and Sport tracs 4405 t-cases operated like the 1st gen with a 3 position t-case. I know your looking else where now but figured I'd give ya some input to it.

3 position as in 2wd 4x4 low and high?

Yes so definitely make sure you take your tag off and match it with any transfer case you look at. And I know that sometimes the GEM in the 01+ Sports and tracs have a tendency to quit working which controls the 4X4 just so you know.

well i was wrong. I took it to a shop today so i could get a confirmation that it was indeed the tcase. They said that was not true, that the driveline and tcase were both fine and it was shifting properly. They said that the gears in my front differential were probably torn apart. They said I would need a new axle assembly that would set me back about $2,600. or i could pull used parts and they would put them in for about $500. Anyone have any ideas....please

Lets start from the beginning. When you put the truck is 4X4 does the light illuminate? If so I would do this I would jack the front end of the truck up have it running and in 4high or low and try to twist the drive shaft because if the transfer case internals are working correctly then the drive shaft shouldn't move since both rear wheels are on the ground. Next if the drive shaft doesn't move put it in 2wd and with the front still jacked up twist the drive shaft and see if the front wheels move. That's what I would do to try confirming what the shop had told you, there is no point in buying a bunch of parts to troubleshoot.

Okay I'm gonna try that in a bit when the rain lets up. (for the record the lights work and I can hear shifting when i go in and out of 2wd and 4x4 lo and hi). If the driveshaft doesn't move in 4x4 would this mean torn up gears like they said?

When in Park and in 4high with the front end lifted if the drive shaft doesn't move then the transfer case should be alright. When in 2wd spin the drive shaft and see if the front wheels move if not then it could be the gears if your CV joints aren't broke.

In 4x4, drive shaft did not move
In 2wd, it did turn, the wheels did not spin
So this means gears?

Then I too would point to the gears possibly...When you tear out the front diff and take the cover off you will see the gears and where the axle shafts come into into it, if the gears aren't stripped then check the axle shaft where it comes into the diff.

ha yea that's a little above my head, I've got the basic mechanical skills down, understand how this works but have never actually taken one apart or anything. Everything I've learned is from this site (thanks guys). how would I go about taking this part off? and thanks for your help and quick responses by the way.

with the front in the air, turn wheel and try to hold the the axle, tell you if the outer CVs on the axle is bad. I would think there would be some noises coming from the front diff if it were broken THAT bad.
