Just curious if a 4000lbs Superwinch will be enough for 1998 X Sport? The vehicles GVW is 3969lbs, and i don't do any serious off roading, most mud i go in is maybe up to the mad wheel/bottom of bumpers. I just want something till i get my Titan 10,000

Thanks

Brett

It is recommended you get a winch that is rated 1.5 times the weight of the vehicle you intend to winch from or out. So basically 8,000 lb would be the bare minimum I'd recommend.

1.5 times the load limit is the general rule of thumb.. which is actually 6000 lb not 8000, but when you are in mud extra pulling strength really helps. You could probably work with the 4000 lb though, just have at least 1 snatch block so you can double up the cable and get more pulling power

Your right on the math.. I'd still wouldn't recommend using anything less than 8K. Warn does make a 6K pound winch however you have to consider the amount of force it takes to unstuck a vehicle. Using a snatch block is one thing but you need to use it correctly. Too many people do not know how to properly use recovery equipment. Just spend the extra money and get a 8K winch or atleast a 9K. Warn's Tabor/Magnum low budget brand is a great starter winch.

I'm with Ben... :salute:

I wouldn't dream of using anything less than an 8K winch for recovery.. I've
been in mud up to the axles and my buddies 8K was straining to overcome the grip it had..

Most ratings are for flat pulls on level surfaces.. Add weird angles, mud, or other obstacles and you will see how ineffective winches under 8k can be.

You will not believe how tight a mud hole can hold a vehicle. These guys are right on the money. 8000 lb minimum. And make sure it has a good cable.

Yep, 8-9k minimum. The one stuck I had just in a couple feet of snow of the side of a hill, took a bit of time and work with a 9k lb warn winch. No way would I get anything less than 8k with a snatch block.
