Just purchased a Ramsey Winch REP 9000 for $100 from a friend. Used but in great condition. It was mounted on a jeep and I would like to get some opinions on mounting it on the Xplorer. Should I permanently mount it on the front or should I use a hitch mount bracket that will able me to move it to the front or rear? What are the positives and negatives of both? Never realized how heavy they where until I thought I could just snatch it up with ease (one handed)NOT!

Hi Alan,
That's the biggest problem. the weight. Now add the weight of the winch mount to that and you need 2 men and a boy to move it around.
Have you looked at the Ramsey Serria wraparound for your Explorer? costly, but they look nice.

Alan -

Has that winch been used under heavy load? I also have a REP 9000 and the first time I tried to pull somebody out of a mud bed, it jammed. It turned out the manufacturer did not put enough washers on the rod so it slipped and got all bent up. Just thought you might want to know that and have it tested before you really have to use it. It was repaired for free.

The winch weighs in at about 95 lbs and a new bumper should add another 30 lbs or so. Keep in mind that your front end will sag a little based on the additional weight.

Thanks for the info, kvo

The winch has not been used at all, it was just mounted on the j**p and never used. I will definitely check it out before I go offroad.

Thanks again,
Alan

Sorry, for the late response I was out of town on a business trip.
