Windshield Film and glare

On my 93 EB and my wife's Mercury Grand Marquis, we have a glare in the rain at night that looks like a sheet of plastic on the outside of our windshields. It is most apparent at night when lights from approaching cars in the other lane shines on our windshields. I have tried detergent, mineral spirits, cleaning powders, ect..but nothing seems to make a difference. About 2 years ago I used Rain X on both vehicles. I also hand wash both vehicles regularly with good quality wash and wax. Sure would appreicate some good advice as to how to correct this. Thanks Mike

Try "NO TOUCH" AUTO GLASS STRIPPER. You can get it at ACE Hardware and some automotive stores.
It's for the exterior only and it takes a little elbow grease but it works very well.

Thanks, Gimp & srpauliesr. I give both a try. Can't imagine how they got that way. My initial reaction was it was Rain X or the Wash & Wax I use. Guess I will never know. Thank again, folks! Mike

Last week on Crank & Chrome they used BarKeepers Friend nonabrasive cleaning powder. Like Ajax just nonabrasive.
That film is from the car wax...

Thanks for the information. Water beads like Rain X used to do, but now I understand it is probably wax from the wash & wax I use to wash both vehicles. I like the shine I get between wax jobs, but guess I will need to keep it away from the windshields. Mike

A friend of mine told me he polished his windshield with toothpaste , said the pumice in it was fine enough to polish (as it does your teeth) but didnt scratch it up . Ive been wanting to try it out . Guess if toothpaste is OK for your mouth it cant hurt your truck , plus it washes off .

Yep, toothpaste will do the trick. Paste not Gel. Actually it will do a lot of things including remove paint and scratches from clear plastics, watch faces etc.

Zaino's glass polish is just toothpaste, smell it.

Thanks Stephen. I will give toothpaste a try, along with Gimp's and others suggestions. A tip on keeping outside mirrows looking good on early our Explorers that has worked for me is black wax shoe polish. It really worked for me but try it a you own risk. So far, I have not have any problems with it. Fills in the bug/rock chips on the back of the mirrows really well and leaves a nice, semi-gloss shine. Mike

I use Bon Ami cleanser (available at the supermarket). It works really well at removing that film.
