Winshield wiper problem

I was driving my 98 sport for the first time in the rain today(owned it for 1.5 months). I had the wipers on the center setting of the intermittent speed control. All of a sudden the wipers started wiping full speed a few times and went back to normal. During the course of my 30 minute drive home they would intermittently speed up and go back to normal. I have also been having problems with the washer squirter button. It works once every 3-4 times I use it. Do you think it I should replace the whole wiper cntrol stalk? Has anyone done this or had any similar problems? Thanks!

I don't know about the Sport, but mine has "speed sensitive wipers", which speeds up the frequency between swipes the faster you go. This functions only when the wiper switch is on a setting past the first detent.

Otherwise, with the failure of the washer button, it probably is a bad "multifunction switch" (turn signal stalk) because I've had 2 replaced. My wipers would turn on whenever they wanted, I couldn't turn them off!

Thanks for your reply. The wipers wipe very ramdomly even if I'm going the same speed. I have a feeling it is the stalk like you suggested.

It could be the stalk because my wipers are doing almost the same thing yours does. I took out the stalk and cleaned all the electrical connections and it worked fine for...a year and a half?

There was a recall on the GEM for the '98/'99 years. Search for Phantom Wipers for more info. Before you know it, they will be turning on by themselves.....
