Hi there I am new to this site. I came across this website and thought it would be useful to the minor problems I am having with my 1994 Limited Edition Explorer. First is my wipers only work on the high speed setting. For a while they worked occasionally in the intermittent settings but now they only work on the high setting. I disconnected the plug going to motor which has 4 pins on it. I seem to be getting proper voltages. I get +12V on one pin constantly and +12V on one of the pins when I put wipers on fast mode. I do hear a relay clicking under my dash. Could that be faulty?
The other problem I am having is my fuel gauge doesn't work. Is that something I have to drop my fuel tank to take a look at or could it be a dash issue? Thanks...

I'd lean more towards the multifunction switch.

For the wipers, it's the little module. It's a super easy repair, you just have to remove the wiper module, pull it apart, and there may be one or more solder joints on a relay that are broken. Simply re-solder them. It's a very common problem.

The fuel gauge, I can't say for sure, but I would assume it's the sending unit.

For reference, you can see the gas pedal in the top left of the photo.

Wiper Problem....

Thank you I will check the relay. I kind of suspect it might be that as it was intermittent then went dead....Will get back to you with results

Cold Solder Joint! Thank You Murkinstock

Murkinstock I owe you a case of beer! You were correct. I pulled the wiper relay opened it up and found a cold solder joint. I tried to attached some photos of the relay opened up but don't know how to attach photos to this message. It took 1 hour to remove one of the screws from the relay so I can have access to it but it took 30 seconds to find the cold solder joint. When I installed it back I only used one of the screws. I can ever so mildly hear the relay clicking properly in intermittent mode and my wipers properly work now. Next project is my fuel gauge. Have to figure out how to drop tank......Thanks Murkinstock!

The fuel gauge issue is a well-known problem in the GEN1 Explorers. The float deteriorates and the arm drops to the bottom of the tank. I ended up having the tank dropped and the entire assembly replaced (pump, sender, etc.) due to having over 200k miles on the clock. There are quite a few posts on this site as to getting access to the tank without dropping it, but I decided to take it to a shop, not having time to get to it and not wanting the '92 out of service while I worked on it.
Having said that, it could be wiring or the gauge, of course.
