I have a '98 Sport with the base double DIN cassette radio. Looking to stick a Kenwood DNX6140 in it but have one question...is there an amp in between the HU and the speakers, or is it using the stereo only for the base system?

I'd like to just use the new Kenwood HU for now and install an amp and new speakers later on.

Well...if I'd have taken that extra 30 seconds to read the stickies I'd have found the answer I was looking for...my apologies.

From the last sticky in this forum:

1) Base systems use a 4X6 Watt Midline radio (AM/FM, AM/FM/Cassette, or AM/FM/CD) with 4 speakers

2) Premium Systems use a 4X20 Watt Premium Radio (AM/FM/Cassette, AM/FM/CD, or AM/FM/Cass/CD) with 4 speakers the amplifier was external from 1990 through 1997; integrated into the radio from 1998 through 2001
the speakers are upgraded over the "Base" level speakers (1990-1997) in 1998, the "Base" speakers were upgraded to Premium level

Since I have a '98, in either case (Base or Premium) everything is in the radio so I'm good to go by just taking my radio out and putting a new Kenwood in. I'll run an amp and new speakers later on.

Sorry about that folks!

Some trucks had amps in them. Mine does. Its located on the passenger side in the trunk area above the wheel. You must remove the trim to get at it. Otherwise if you wire your hu up and get no sound then you probably have an amp. I believe the amp wire is either blue or a blue with a black stripe.
