91 mazda navajo
I have a 93 mazda navajo that wont start after its shut off if its hot. the temp is right where it should be, i can hear the fuel pump kicking in just fine but i dont know what to think. it will fire and idle irratically for a few seconds at 100 to 300 rps then just die. it usually takes about 45 minutes to start again after being shut off, this winter wasnt bad, but now that warmer weather is back it is doing it every time the truck is shut off. i havent tried to pull the codes yet but i really cant think of what it could be, the only thing that pops into my head would be a pluged cat, im not sure about the explorer 4.0, but the navajo 4.0 has 2 cats. i had a similar problem with my rx7 which also had 2 cats i tore out the one closest to the manifold and welded in a pipe and it ran great after, but since the first cat on this truck is so close to the yoke i'd hate to cut it and not have that be the problem. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks alot, john

i forgot to add that 2 plugs keep fouling out, i replaced the wires and plugs a couple weeks ago and am still having the problems. could the problem with the plugs possibly be from bad connections in the coil? if so could the coil the the entire problem for it not wanting to starty when hot? i heard there are a lot of problems with the ignition modules of fords, is this a type of sign? also i went to autozone and had it scanned and the codes 67 and 114 came up..... any ideas? thanks alot, john

Do you feel up to trying to pull the codes yourself (see www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html)? I question that 67; '92 and up should be outputting three digit codes, not two digit.
That said, if they are real codes, both of those codes may indicate operator error when pulling the codes. 1st question: are they KOEO, KOER, or continuous memory codes? KOEO 67 (when it's a real code) almost always indicates that the KOEO test was performed with a manual transmission in gear instead of neutral. Rarely see it on an auto tranny, but it would indicate a fault in the park/neutral indicator. KOEO or KOER 114 would indicate that the IAT temperature sensor was out of range, usually a result of running the test on a cold engine.
Among the other things I would check: IAC valve, fuel pressure/delivery.

A bad TPS can cause an IAT code.

But yes, I'd check the IAC, fuel; maybe also clean the MAS and check for vacuum leaks.

thanks alot, will check these, i pulled the cats last night and all seemed fine. when the truck was tested it was warm and in first gear. thanks again, john

oh.... second code was 14, not 114, just noticed i had the extra 1 in there

wont start hot

ok, my 91 still wont start when its hot, the code was 14, i checked the coil pak primary a little high(1.1 omh) on two, the secondary's were fine. i pulled the cats, they were fine, i pulled the iac, iat, maf and tpn sensors, all looked ok but i didnt check resistance. when i pulled the maf i noticed a bit of oil around the edge of the body so i took the hose off the throttle body and there was some in that side of the hose too. when i took the throttle body off i noticed a small pool in the back of the intake. after i put everything back together i took it for a drive, ran more unstably than normal, i shut it off outside my shop so i could clean up a bit and when i went to start it same this, fires idles 100-300 rpms for a few seconds then shuts off. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks, kre8ive_kustomz

icm ..... where is it on my 91?

ok, i replaced my tp, iac, ect, iat, and maf sensors as well as the pcm. i had my coil checked and all is well, can someone please help me to locate the ignition control module? i think this is about all i have left. the problem is the truck not wanting to start after it has been running. with all the work i have done today what it does is idle at about 100 rpm(sounds exactly like a vehicle with a faulty ground after you shut it off) i checked gas pressure by releasing the fuel pressure release valve, pressure is definately there. any help would be greatly appreciated.

i believe its up by the radiator, on the passenger side of the vehicle. I am going by memory though. It should be attached to the front radiator support near the corner of the engine compartment, behind the headlight.

Thats where it is.:bounce:
It's very flat and I think held down by one screw and a tab on the other side.
If my memory serves me well.

Have you tried a pressure holding test on the fuel pressure regulator? I know at VW we had some problems with these?

ok, kinda what i was thinking, i was going my my chilton manual and it showed it on the drivers side then tonight i paged through it a bit and noticed they had the battery drawn on the drivers...... oops. thanks all
