- 1991 short box
My old Dodge D-50 finally gave up the ghost. Just too much wrong to fix, besides being able to see completely through the box because of rust. So I bought a 91 Ranger for $500. Known problems were a major leak in the rear - left brake line and a busted right forward shock mount, a fan motor that only runs on the high setting, and a 'soft' clutch till you 'pump' it up. If it was summer I would do it myself. So I'm having a repair shop do the two major things... shock stud replacement and the brake line.
I already put in a new thermostat (195) with new antifreeze and changed the oil and filter. The last person had put the oil filter on way too tight and it was the only stumbling block. I have to block all but just a tiny bit of the radiator to get anything over 150 water temp. The heater is so efficient just running it keeps the water temp at 130 or below at idle. I don't think I'll see 195 or higher till this summer. I read that it takes a water temp of 205 to get the EFI to run in the lean mode. Never saw a 205 thermostat.
Who ever put that old post in about replacing the shock studs deserves a GOLD STAR. Great pictures and commentary! Hope to find more articles like that.
