OMG bro you better buy 5 DA sanders and like 200 80/210 grit wheels. You are a better man than me for taking on that many odd surfaces. Maybe you should follow the "Alien" them and throw like moss and bubbly stuff all over it to make it spooky. Then you wouldn't have to sand anything :D

hahahaha I might consider doing that... I'll put in a fog machine and an "Area 51" sign.

I think to make sanding easier, I'm just going to put a thin layer of bondo over everything. That will help smoth things over.
 






I just got a DA and it rocks. I just wish the sanding discs would last longer.
 






hydroxy- mix bondo with resin to the consistency of a thin milkshake, add resin hardener (no bondo hardener) and spread that on. it'll make the sanding part as easy as possible.

by itself or with a piece of cloth?
 






bad news... on trip back to school, head unit decided it wouldn't stay on for more then 5 seconds at a time... so I'm going to have to bring that back to circuit city... good thing I got a warrenty.

I was riding shotgun when it happened, so I was able to pull it out and see if any wires were loose (which they weren't). I also noticed that it seems as if when Circuit City did the install, they just hacked up the wiring instead of using a harness.... Is that what it looks like here?

OMG, I hate it when they cut wires and what's even worse, they didn't even solder them together or use a quick connect. Some people have no business being in the install business at all. I wonder if they are told to cut the wires like that to make connects? Make them fix it for sure. And fix those connections, should not be twisted then taped togeather. That is just plain awful and laziness in my book.

I gunna come there and gut your new mounty foo. I got that done like 2 years ago when I didn't know JACK sh*t about anything. (not that I know anything now:p ).

Here is a funny video.... Valentine 1 - the best radar detector out there. We were on the way home, guy in the backseat had the remote to the stereo... Laser warning kept going off on the V1... thought I was a goner. Later on we realized that the remote was setting it off...

Here are pics of the system after 1/2 of the 2nd layer of fiberglass has been put down. Since I'm back at school I can only work on it on the weekends... HOPEFULLY it will be all but painted by next weekend.

Right now it's stuffed with tools and supplies. The box is so big, and I had to take 2 people back to school with me, I was scrambling for room. There is a gallon of bondo hidden somewhere in there as well =P

Yea... I'm going to be sanding for the rest of my life. Hopefully I'll be able to get it *somewhat* smooth when I apply the bondo/resin milkshake. That way sanding will be easier.

And all my sanding will be done by hand... no electric toys here =(
 






Hand cramps! If I were you I'd be breaking out the 100ft(maybe a couple of 'em!) Orange extension cord!!

Ha, I'd definetly do that, but..... I dont even have any power tools really. I have a drill - havn't checked about getting a sanding attachment for that tho. Is it worth it?


Question: The screw heads are sticking out maybe 1/16"... They wouldn't sink in when I was screwing them in, and I dont want to try now for fear of cracking all the seals. What would be a good way to smooth that out?

All the screws you see in the back are sticking out 1/16"

And that gap is only there because I can't push the amp rack all the way in tight until I cut off the excess fiberglass sticking out in the front.

Edit: I realized they are hard to see in the other pic... so here is another.

DUDE you need some sort of power sander. You absolutely cannot sand all that by hand! I don't think it's humanly possible.

For the screws, you could grind them down. You should have sunk them in in the first place. ;)
 






All I can say is, "Better you than me!" :-) Hope it all works out well for you in the end though. Should sound nice!
 






what did u use as a sealent for the wooden parts of the box? id imagine that taking the screws out and using a counter sink will not dirupt ur seals

i did that on my box and the seales are still totaly fine i use liquid nails though..silicone would have not let go either

Ha, well I guess we'll have to see how it goes... I might be getting some people who want to learn how to use fiberglass and bondo to help me if I'm lucky. I think if I lay the bondo/resin milkshake smooth enough, I wouldn't think the sanding will be that big of a deal. But I've never done it, so I dunno.

Question: why are there cordless drills on eBay for $20-25 ? What are the drawbacks to them? And can I just get a sanding attachment for a regular drill? and not buy a speciality sander?

As far as the seals... I used liquid nail inbetween all of the boards, and then some painter's caulk or whatnot (chris's stuff) to go in all the corners. I'm just worried that when I counter sink them, it will pull the pieces a little tighter together and crack the seal. I guess I'll just have to take that chance.

I can't wait for the weekend so I can get back to work!!!
 






A cordless drill won't help you sand anything. A DA sander would be ideal, or a palm sander would help too.

just use a counter sink bit..that way u are not putting any force on the seal at all

a countersink bit can just be a large drill bit that is the same size as the head of ur screw..ud then "drill" the size of the head on the screws u are using..so no force on the seal at all then just snug the screws up when u screw it back together
