last night i was on my way to a dance competition (my girlfriend was in it) i left my dorm and turned left onto mill avenue (the main drag here in tempe, for about a mile there are restaurants and stores lining both sides of the street) i noticed a black sp8 waiting to turn left onto mill at one of the lights as i passed and i slowed down so that it would catch up after it turned so i could see it. i got caught in the left lane at the light at mill and university (one end of the major shopping area) and the saleen pulled up right beside me. i looked over but i couldn't see in at all and couldn't tell who was driving or what they were thinking i bumped ja rule a minute then turned it down, deliberately hit the fake nos remote bottle opener and arming switch (gotta psyche em out lol, it was really just my fogs and my bass remote nob) the left turn light turned green and we both got serious. i could hear the saleen revving hard. i glanced over at the race craft suspension sticker and reveled in the fact that i was a bit lower. finally the turn light turned yellow and we new the race was upon us. our light went and i got the jump pretty good (he may not have had awd, but i didn't hear wheel spin either) by the top of first gear he was just at my rear end and he held it their until the top of second when his truck shifted around 55-60 and where mine pulls hardest at the top of the powerband between 60 and 70 and i new i had him good. when i shut down at 75 it was a good car length between his front and my rear. i was so excited, i glanced in the rear view and i could see the guy driving and i swear he was crying lol

i can't imagine what all the pedestrians were thinking. most people don't even realize that explorers come with v8s, let alone that a saleen explorer exists or a "svt cobra" explorer either (i know mines fake, but to the average person its not any more far fetched than the saleen). if i'd been sitting their i would have gone crazy watching this race. not to mention how much faster than we really were people probably thought we were running (most saleens are damn fast vehicles and most people know that, and don't know that the sp8 isn't) what do you guys think? anybody else been in a race like this?

p.s. we don't really have a kill forum here 'cause we're a more "adult" board, but times like this i think we need one.

woohoo! explorers!!! :bounce: :D

don't know my specs, i just have all the air flow mods hypertech tuning, and the e-303 cam with some stuff to make it fit. my trucks not really fast or anything, but it moves alright and tows great! and it beat the saleen handily:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Well, the Saleen XP8 could come with either a 222hp motor or with the s/c to make around 290 hp. Not surprising you beat him cause he probably didn't have a blower. Good job though!

i know the specs of the XP8 and the options available. it was just a really fun race, and yes i did beat him by about the amount of difference the cam should make since he probably had everything else done that i have.

on a side not does anyone know the claimed performance numbers of the supercharged XP8 and the n/a XP8? i have a pretty good idea, but i was just wondering what saleen claims?

street racing is bad... especially with all those pedestrians around!!!!!

Any chance you could have raced one with the blower? You have around 300 HP right? I think that's about what the saleen w/blower has.

no i don't have that much. all of the mods if you took the claimed gains for my truck would give me about that, but i really think its closer to 260 or 270 (with a very healthy dose of driveline and accessory loss figured in with all my accessories at full speed and the awd) i should have about as much torque as the supercharged xp8 though so maybe it was, but the way the race played out it seemed like he had a better low end than high end. besides who knows whats going on in that truck (for all i know, he could have any combination of mods done to his saleen that could be very minor or very big and it just isn't tuned properly) the only think i do know is that the week before i took my truck into my buddies shop and we changed my plugs, replaced a few injectors, and squeezed the cam in, he had supercharged (with powerdyne) a black saleen that he said some guy from the east was driving. in that case it was running at just the six lbs that those recommend stock, and it is somewhat possible if not likely (how many saleen's are in phoenix?) that is what i was up against. i don't want to claim anything i don't know for sure, so make of it all what you will. i was just happy, 'cause it was so cool to see the two explorers together like that.

would have loved to see that race great job expo
Chris

just a little longer

man that was a job well done. gotta give it to my fellow arizonian. but by seeing this i only want to save my fundage up sooner so i can buy my mods sooner. i could go out and buy a diablo chip tomorrow if i really wanted to or even maybe get an exhaust put on but i was going to wait till next year so i could determine if i could afford the 347 and all the little goodies that i want with it. anyways i think it would be a waste of money to buy all the smaller stuff now for this engine when i am planning on putting a whole other engine in, in about a year or less. but it sure is tempting. i suppose the good things in life we have to wait for. sure am bored in the meantime though. lol. anyone got an extra 15 grand they dont need? hehe. hey i had to ask.

Yeah sounds like you did good expo.. Nice job! :)

yeah- nice job man. but are you sure that it was an xp8? i know they also made an xp6 which is the sohc motor.everything else looks the same on the truck.

yeah, i know about the sohc one too. we've had quite a few threads about the saleens. its nice to see a saleen on the site, as far as i know your the only one (there may be some but they don't seem to post if there are) is your truck "stock" saleen? is it the supercharged? do you know how to tell if the xp8 is supercharged or not? is it obvious from the outside? you should definitely stick around here, you'll love the site. later man -drew

That was me in the saleen. Just out for a joy ride in my buggy. I wasn't aware that you were racing. I was just on my way to the mall to get a new pair of sneakers. :)

Anyone know how much HP the new supercharged bonnevilles have? I got my ass handed to me tonight by one of those.

expo5.0, yeah my saleen explorer is the stock one. it is not supercharged.there is no way to tell from the outside if it is supercharged or not. i have heard that the powerdyne supercharger that they put in the truck is very loud and has alot of whine. so the only way you could tell is by the noise. i have another 1996 explorer with the ohv motor with just about every bolt-on mod you can think of and it doesn't even come close to the saleen. i love that truck.the only thing i would get for the truck is a superchip.
