Wrong Air Filter for 02 Sport. Why

Well I have a 4L 2002 Sport and the Air filter cross reference at the part count was far larger then the one in the air box. Now I am new to this vehicle and still trying to figure out why this should be a problem. Ford told me there is very little difference other than the obvisous between the 2dr and 4dr. The parts place is getting a different filter tomorrow and hopefully the correct one. What of the Oil filter which will be next to change soon enough.

I have been pushed back and forth between the two forums here. When I post in the 2002 forum I am told I am in the wrong forum and when I post here it relates to older generation build.

Seems I can't win and no clear cut answer presents itself with all the reading I have done so far.

Don't know on the air filter but the 2002+ sports use the 1995+ chassis. Only the sheet metal changed on the 2002+ 2 door sport.

The 2002+ 4 door Explorers got the totally new designed with 4 wheel independent suspension.

That is why you are getting refered to the 1995-2001 forum.

Well from specs on the vehicle it has the high HP 4L engine. Dash controls, power train are said to be the same by Ford Service dept. I can check with another dealer and see what they say. When going into a parts place specifying the OEM model and year does not result in the correct parts. Why not then. Dahhhh

This was true before 2002 models. If whoever told you that knew you were talking about an 02 they are wrong.

The SOHC 4.0L has been around since 97.

Are you only saying explorer and not explorer sport? Try just looking up 01 parts, it should simply things.
