I have a 98 4X4 Sport, 105k miles. In the last few months I'm hearing this noise from the front end. I can hear it and sort of feel it (very light). the wump, wump is constant with the speed of the vehicle, even if it's coasting in of out of gear. I just had new shocks and all tires rotated and balanced. It made the same noise before I had this work done.

Any ideas?

I have a similar noise that occurs at about 35 mph. At speeds lower than 30 and higher than 40 mph, it's not audible. My dad took a ride with me a few weeks back and said he could feel it in the passenger side footwell. I'm pretty sure it's a broken belt in the right front tire. I've never tried to rotate the tires (they're shot) to see if that stops it but based on my experience, I'm pretty sure that's what it is.

Now, if you've rotated tires and it's still happening, then you most likely have a different issue.

Dave.

rik,
I read your thread but what was your solution (or did you find one)?
Thanks, Dave.

no solutions yet. the garage told me that the bearing seemed ok. I have to try some other tires to see if there's any difference.

I've got nothing planned this weekend, maybe I'll try the same thing. I'll let you know how it goes.

i had the same thing and changed both front hubs and all was well.

I have the same problem and it is progressively getting worse. I visually checked everything, rotated the tires, etc....no change.

I haven't had it checked out yet but, the bearings thing sounds about right.

Anyone?

I finally rotated the tires this weekend and discovered the inside of the passenger front tire to be severely cupped. The "wump-wump-wump" noise I heard at about 35 mph is now coming from the corner of the truck where that tire is mounted. So, as soon as Uncle Sam kicks my refund back, new BFGs, here I come!!

Bronco.....out of curiousity what size of BFG's you going to go with? are you going with the Long Terrain, AT's or MT's?

I was just out pricing BFG's today at lunch.

255 / 70 / R16's

thx.....Mike.
