In the directions it tells you to remove the fuel pump and electric fan fuses before flashing....no problem locating the fuel pump fuse but what electric fan is it referring to? (since there is no electric radiator fan) We unhooked both the fuel pump and blower fuse and proceeded to use the XCalibrator...upon startup the truck runs for a few seconds then just dies!!!?!?!? please help

That's weird. I didn't have to do anything like that. Simply plug and play with mine (used on a '99 and '00 Explorer).

You are indeed "supposed to" remove the fuel pump fuse, but in reality I never do.

Don't worry about the electric fan fuse if you do not have one.

Don't worry about the fuses, flash it back to the factory setting, if it runs without dieing, you have a bad program, will need to be re-done

SCT indicates that the KAM must be reset after download and installation of a performance program in the pre-98 computers. So, after installing your new program, disconnect the battery for 10 minutes so any remaining memory of the previous program will be erased in the KAM (keep alive memory.) This should make a world of difference.

Also, I would strongly recommend you remove the fuel pump fuse despite other recommendations in this thread. In fact, a 12 volt battery charger is also used during the new upload to ensure full current to the PCM. Any reduction in voltage will potentially disrupt the downloading program.

The pre-98 PCM is a slower processor and the SCT programming, while quite an advantage, still seems to have a few glitches. However, SCT has been very helpful in working through these issues with with the tuner/dealer and the end user. I would suggest you check out their web site and read all about the X-cal II issues- particulary in 96 and 97 (same computer for the V-8 Explorer/Mountaineer.

Why all the "pre-98" recommendations? He's posted in the 2002-2005 forum. Just curious. I'm also not convinced I need to do the fuel pump thing and a battery charger would definitely be a hassle. I've had a lot of communication with Doug at Bama through both my SCT chip and now XC2 tuner. He's never stressed the need for all these extra steps. I trust his judgement and my Ex runs like a top with his tunes in place and definitely much better than stock.

I do switch from time to time between my 91 Torque and 91 Performance programs, and use my 87 Performance tune on road trips. I always notice the difference between the tunes. Are you saying that if I follow these onerous steps my Ex will run that much better? I don't see it.

Best of luck to you.

I have switched tunes in my '99 probably over 100 times without pulling any fuses; never a problem.

I am 150% satisfied with my XC2 and the programming that's within it. I much prefer a flasher to a chip (having used both). Doug (Bama) is a dude. Supposedly you're best served ordering his handiwork through explorerexpress.com these days.

You can order directly from Doug's website - www.bamachips.com.

This is per Doug the other day:

Finally, yes, I have allowed Explorer Express to handle my Explorer and Sport Trac emails and orders. Basically when I get a email request I foward it to them and allow them to work over the details with you about it and then place your order with them. From there they foward the order to me and it is programmed and drop shipped from me.

Seeing that Doug said in the same thread that he's too busy to respond to emails these days in a timely manner, might be easier to go right to EE and ask for Doug's tuning from there.

explorerexpress.com
bamachips.com

Best bets. I'd ask for Patty at EE. She's pretty good at replying.

I think that's what they cost. I don't really remember what I paid. I was working on a trade-in program as well (trading in my SCT chip on the flasher).

Hi foxy,
CAPA are the Australian agents for SCT, I contact them, es[ecially as they are in SA. I'm in Brisbane and have only just got my machine, but I'm heading the flash route soon enough.

Just a little more feedback for Doug @ Bama and Explorer Express. I contacted Doug on the phone and told him what I was looking for, and he referred me to EE. They were very nice over there, and I ordered the Xcal2. It arrived in about a week and it's freakin' awesome. It has 3 programs on it, and I started with the 93 octane performance tune. Now I'm not the kind of person that will say I felt a seat of the pants gain from a filter, underdrive pullies, etc. But there is no doubt his performance tune made a very big difference. Downside is filling up with 93 octane. I haven't tried the towing tune with my loaded trailer, but without it seems like it's what I'm going to want. Now the 87 economy tune I'm not real crazy about. There was a noticable lack of power and my gas mileage wasn't any better. I actually get better mileage with the 93 performace tune, go figure, so that's where it will stay most likely. Anyway, just wanted to say, don't fear Explorer Express, it seems they and Doug are on top of things, and it's worth the $. I expected a change, but was surprised to feel what I did. I would just call Doug first, he's real nice, and give him a heads up on what you're looking for.
