Yawn...

well, id basically like to do a 4 inch lift and a set of 33 inch BFG mud terrains, with a lock rite in the rear and re-gear to 4:10 or lower. ive got 3:27 now, and i hate them. for the trails around here, that would basically be a perfect setup. any bigger would be overbuilding. then ill just upgrade stuff as i break it. oh, and a 5 speed conversion is a must, whenever my transmission explodes. im still researching which lift i want to get, as there are a bunch of them out there for the mighty rangers. what does your buildup consist of David?

Rangers

Sorry wrong David, but I did have a Ranger a long long time ago.

But one day, Trigger stood up and threw him off the back and he was run over by Geralds Tonka.:( :D Its ok though we burried him in the back yard.

4:10 gears might work fine but from my own experience, when I did my lift and and put on 33's, i went with 4:56's and it seemed just about perfect.

Here's what I have on my Ranger:

77' Bronco D44 w/Superwinch hubs, open diff, 4:56 gears, Performance Unlimited Steering system
Widened 8.8 rear, 31 spline, large bearing ends, 10" drums, limited slip, 4:56 gears
35" (equiv.) X-Terrains on 16x8 Classic II's
6" Skyjacker leaves on 1" block and extended Chevy shackles.
Summit hide-a-hitch (sits flush w/bottom of frame)
JBA silver ceramic headers
Gibson muffler
James Duff bed supports
Fabtech spare tire mount (flat mount style)

AWESOME TRUCK MAN! i looked around for a pic of it or something but couldent find anything. the trails around here are a lot diferent than the pics ive seen of the ones out west. mostly, momentum for mud is all that is required, as rockcrawling is a 48 hour drive from here (moab). so 4.56 gears are probally a little low for what id need. i do a lot of commuting, so id like to be able to maintain some sort of highway speeds and fuel economy. what exactly did the james duff bed supports do? the one thing i have noticed is that the chassi could use a little bit of stiffening back there, because at full articulation my bed will touch the cab, and the tailgate will sometimes fall open. if the supports help with that, im going to have to pick myself up a pair of those.

Thanks FourXFred...I run my truck without the tailgate so I figured I better stiffen it up back there. It may or may not help your situation but you can't go wrong for $40, thats what I payed when i bought them.
I'd still recommend the 4.56 gears cause I can cruise all day at highway speeds with no problem...just a suggestion.;)
I'll post a pic or 2 here, I don't have any in my pic album on here at the moment.

I'll have to resize the other pics I wanted to post, but here's one for now.

Just my 2cents but I would go with the 4.56 gears. You said you wanted something for momentum in mud. That is a really good reason to go for the lower gears. They really are not that much lower than the 4.10's and you will really like the extra torque you will gain from them.

Mud can be a tricky little devil trust me (grew up in Ohio). It looks sloppy and watery then you go thru it a time or two. After that you go back or find a new hole that is thick and clumpy and sticks to everything. This is where the extra torque from 4.56 gears come in.

Plus if you ever decide to go bigger you wont have to worry about your gears unless you go huge (37"+). I am in the process of installing 4.56 gears in my Explorer and I am thinking I should have gotten the 4.88's.

P.S. WOW Dave you truck looks so pretty... :p

I tell you what!

some give me a e-mail and I'll send you a picture of my old Ranger. Then you can post it and Talk about it!:D

It was Really cool!;) I miss the old girl:( What a Great truck she was, still best I ever owned.:p

fourxfred@explorerforum.com

send me the pic and ill post it for you. dave, wow. your truck is completely awesome. my buddy has a solid axle 94 ranger, but hes using a full width d44 out of a wagoneer, with leaf springs. it is no where near as nice of a job as your truck came out. i guess i will probally go with 4.56's, as you guys suggested when i finally get the money to do the mods i want to. keep up the good work man.

Fourxfred.....

Your e-mail will not work. It says no such account. It looks like it forwarded to a Aol acount.

Thanks Fred, those pics were taken before the big rollover, so everything looks nice and purdy there...lol.

Hey Felix, recognize that rock pile?

Heres my ranger project :D It went from TTB to SAS and then to no axle without ever leaving to driveway ;)

Guess you could call it a stealth axle swap.:p

No there was nothing stealth about it. ;) my neighbors were not happy about the air compressor kicking on at 10:30 pm :D or the grinder for that matter, for weeks on end. :D

Dave - Yep I sure do remember that rock pile. Plan on visiting it again this spring when my SAS is finished.

Stic-O here is your '96 Ranga. (I hope this works)
