I have a 98 Explorer and need new rotors and pads. My question : How can I tell if I have Anti Lock brakes. I called Auto Zone and they tell me there is some kind of a ring on the back of the rotor. Isn't there a way to tell without pulling the rotor?

TIA Rupp

You should have ABS.

But if you want to check to make sure, look at the back of the front rotor/spindle assembly and look for a small loomed wire bundle going to a sensor that's mounted to the back of the spindle with a single bolt. There should be one on each side of the front axle.

Do you have a 2 or 4 wheel drive X? The 4wd (and AWD) X use the same rotor with or without ABS (the ABS exciter ring is part of the wheel bearing). If you have a 2wd there is a difference between rotors. The easiest way to tell if you have front ABS is to look at the brake hose going to either front caliper. If you have ABS there will be a wireing harness clipped to the brake hose. If you don't, the clips may or may not be there, but there will be no wireing harness.
