Hi all,
Been a real long time since I posted last. Unfortunately, I've been way too busy. Well, after months and months of waiting, I've finally tracked down tires for my '01 Sport. TireRack had two choices for me this morning: Pirelli Scorpion A/T's or Yoko Geolander AT+ II's. I opted for the Yoko's based on research and the recommendation from the fine folks at Tire Rack. Two questions: 1) what do you think of the Yoko's? 2) should I mount 'em white letters in or out? I've been trying to find pics of Explorers with stock rims and stock size tires mounted black letters out. Does anyone have any? Also, how rediculous is it that NO ONE will sell me a tire that is not on Ford's list. Hell, I can't even buy rims anymore. Too bad we live in such a litigious society. Thanks for your help/opinions....
Steve

I put the yokohama geolander a/t + 2 's on my explorer last week.
They are in size 265/70/17.

I like them a lot so far but havent done any offroading or nothin in them. They have pretty cool looking thread and I hear the pirellis at's dont have as much thread.

Id definately go with raised white letters. I thought that the work YOKOHAMA would look a little funny on white letters but it is written pretty small and looks pretty nice. Just take a look at my link in the signiture. There are several pics of my Yokos.

any more questions jsut ask...

they are good tires.... wear good and are pretty aggressive.... anyways, a lot of places will mount tires not on fords approved list..... i have 31 bfgs on my explorer 1994... i didnt get them as part of the recall though..... America's/Discount Tire Company will mount anything you want..... i used to work @ can 14

I'm getting some 31 10.50 15's to replace my Firestones in the Ford Recall... The only thing is with getting tires that aren't on the list is that you have to pay up front and then submit the recipt and old tires to Ford to get the refund... Other than that they should mount up what you want... Even new wheels... I'm getting new rock crawlers too... I'm getting them at discount tire...

www.tires.com see if there is a shop in your area... If not then they'll be happy to ship em to you!!!

actually, you need to lay out the cash for any tire (approved or not) if you don't get them from a ford dealership. you are correct in that ford will reimburse for anything other than a wilderness at. however, i called discount tire and tire rack and they both refuse to sell anything other than what's on the list. in fact, if you go to tirerack.com and do a search for wheels for a 2001 explorer, none will come up. maybe it's just me, but this has been my experience.

I had a set of 32" Geolanders on my 94. They got real noisy and wore out after about 25,000 miles. The BFG's I had on before that lasted 40,000 miles before I took them off, and they were only 2/3 worn. The Geolanders were better in the dirt than the BFG's.

Steve, I remember you said you worked at the World Trade Center. I certainly hope you and your associates made it out ok. Our prayers are with you.

I'm OK!

Rick,
Thank you so much for your concern. It's a miracle, but I and my fellow employees (598 of us) made it out of Tower 2 without any scratches. I have been temporarily relocated up in Hartford, CT. So, if any of you Explorerphiles are located in Hartford, let me know. Thank you again for your thoughts, prayers and general concern. I think we will all be able to band together and get through this one day at a time. Thanks again!
Steve

That's GREAT news! I am super happy for you and your fellow employees. I'm glad you checked in to let us know you were ok, I felt like a member of the "family" was missing.

Take care and God Bless!

I just put a set of Geolander AT+II's on my Mountaineer last week. They look great and they handle MUCH better than the Firestones that I had on there. They are quieter than the Firestones and seems to corner much better also. The tread pattern looks really aggressive, so they should do really good in the snow. Tirerack.com rates them very high.I would highly recomend them.
