How close have you been to running out of gas?

I was on vacation this week towing our 23' trailer with a 2007EB 4.6L. I had just under half a tank left and it was only 60km to the next town. Well towing at 8.5mpg quickly moved that fuel gauge! The gauge was on E and I was watching the driving computer in the dash telling me the distance to empty. 10 miles (Okay, should be close), 5 miles (hmm, where is that station?), 3 miles (how am I going to explain this to the wife?), we crest a hill and there is the station!! As I am slowing to make the turn the computer switches to 0 miles left. I make it the pumps and start pumping.

The manual states the capacity is 85.2 Liters. I pumped in 83.9 Liters!!! I must have been seconds away from stalling. After that I filled up at 1/2 tank on the guage for the rest of the trip!

My moms 08 escape has that computer too, were about 5 miles from the closest gas station, and her thing said 3.4 miles or something around 3, drove the 3 miles, til it said 0 and still drove the other 2 or so miles with it saying 0.

When I had my taurus, I used to take a fuse out, to stop the odometer, so my gramma didnt know I was driving so much, the same fuse did the speedometer too. I had done something, and acc. blew a fuse, which I thought was the one for the odometer, so no biggie, with like 1/2 tank left, and just let the fuse go til I had time to run to AutoZone, which was like 3 days later, one night at like 2am I went out for a late night trip to mcdonalds for a burger, and the engine started sputtering, and when id hit the throttle, it would die out, then come back, and then it stalled, i steered it into this gas station just rolling, lucky me they were closed, 2am, no one to really ask for a ride, I couldnt let my mom know, I wasnt sposed to be out lol.

So I didnt know it was out of gas, the gauge said like 1/2 still which I was like wtf? So pitch black, im under my steering column using my phone as a light, I switch a fuse around to the one that was blown, turn the key on, and gas goes from 1/2 to about almost a centimeter below E.

Then some kinds on a golf cart came driving by going to circle k, and asked me if I needed help, so i rode back with them to get a gas can, and then they drove me to the gas station that was still open, and I got like 5$ worth of gas, and put it in my taurus, and headed my ass back home, next morning went and filled up lmao

Let's just say I was so low that the truck wouldn't start because I was parked downhill.

X2 I have also been in this situation more times than i care to recount.

but funniest time was when i let my brother in law borrow my X one day. And i told him it was low on fuel and would need some. He says ok no prob. Well i am work and i get a call from him saying he's in the driveway of building complex and it won;t start. and claims he been trying to get it to start but nothing is happening. So I came home from work to see the X pointed downhill of course so i rolled the truck to the right in the driveway to get it pointed uphill again. and of course it started right up. he was so exasperated after i did that. never borrowed it again:cool:

flash forward to 2009 and now he owns his own X that never below 1/4 tank these days.:D

LOl i have ran out once(fuel gauge said i had a 1/4 tank) lol thought that tank lasted a long time so now i use the odometer. And then once driving the cummins out hunting it said i had 0 to go when i finally got to a gas station and put 40gal in a 38 gal tank.. lol

i have run out of fuel many times...im not too good at that. once i ran dry on my street bike....had to call my buddy to drive back on his bike and take me to a gas station....of course this was coming home from a trip so we both had backpacks and were in the middle of no where.....and i was riding ***** with a gas can strapped to my backpack.....it was pretty funny site.....2 6 foot guys on a 06 ninja screamin down the road with full gear and a gas can

Hahaha thats funny, well at least a gallon would get you like 50 miles compared to our like 14 lmao

hahaha! seriously! i miss riding that thing. i havent ridin it in almost a year...i dont get it. but i used to ride it daily when i lived in california last summer when gas was upwards of 4 bucks a gallon (premium) ....that was fun...driving around everywhere and buying gas with a 20 and still getting change back. but now i have an explorer with a gas gauge that doesnt work....wtf. anyone want to buy a 2007 gsxr?! $5000!

Haha, im only 17, but when i get out on my own I want a nice bike, I always rode on my uncles when I was a kid and loved it, then dirtbikes and all that..ahhhhhh :)

just be careful my friend! ive seen way too many people wreck these things right after they get em.....not to say you dont know haow to ride...its just that i know you enter dangerous teritory when you start to get ****y.

anyway! back to the thread!

another time i was driving my truck and it started to sputter and i yanked the wheel to the first gas station i saw (across the street) and the engine cut out 10 feet from the pump...of course it was uphill....i had to get a push. this was also last summer.....theres something about rediculous gas prices that make people drive on empty as long as they can....

LMFAO I know, I still managed not to let my taurus get below 1/4 tank....was it ever much higher? NO haha.

But yeah I know what you mean, most of the punks around here that get them have that attitude...im not like that lol. Id ride it like a harley lmao

My POS Escort's fuel gauge would randomly work, so sometimes I'd see a half a tank and then run out :p: I've run out of gas a lot of times, not since ~03 I think, when I bought my 97 Explorer, I don't remember running out on either of my 2 Explorers so it's been a while, might be because I started making more money...

i have gotten down to 11 miles to go and stopped immediatly. luckily i was near a town. i didnt trust how accurate it was until 0. your driving gets somewhat better when you get to 11 miles ill empty.lol

Right now my needle is hovering just above E and that will get me to work and back (I live only a mile away) but one night when I first got my truck I drove it 5 miles from my house to Wal-Mart to get gas on a needle that was on E. I barely made it.

Let's just say I was so low that the truck wouldn't start because I was parked downhill.

I myself have never ran out of gas (knock on wood), unless the riding lawn mower counts. That being said, I do keep a 5 gallon gas can at the house because my wife for some reason thinks the low fuel light is a liar. She has had the nose down no start issue several times.

i ran out of gas today. was seconds from a gas station going around a turn and started to spurter and ran out right when i got in the station

I was doing the old slow down to try to make every drop go as far as possible as well! People start to get annoyed when your driving 85km/hr in a 100 zone with a trailer and can't pass you due to oncoming traffic! Going slower also prolonged the agony of finally finding that station!

Haha, I had this problem once, accept I was on a half of a tank in the middle of Rausch Creek Off-Road Park on one of the steeeeep descents. I was able to coast down to the bottom without the engine and then start it at the bottom.

The lowest my tank has ever gotten is empty. I ran out in my Churches parking lot. My friend siphoned some gas into my tank and I went home.

I have run out.

Engine didn't die, just lost power and I was able to pull off onto a side road. I had 5 gallons in the back I poured in the tank.
