Trying to figure out what the source of a new noise is on my Dad's '05 Mountaineer. It's a low, constant rumble (but fairly subtle), that changes in intensity with road speed. It sounds to me like wheel bearings, but the vehicle only has 35K miles, so it's tough to imagine wheel bearings going away at that low a mileage.
I pulled all four wheels yesterday - no play found in the hubs. Only thing obvious was that the ball joint boots have failed, but that wouldn't cause this type of noise.
The noise is subtle enough at this point that it's hard to tell where exactly it might be coming from.
Any further diagnostic steps I can take to try to isolate? It seems crazy to just jump in and do all four wheel bearings.
