'94 Explorer XLT
Looking to replace a wore out car with something different. Looking at a '94 Explorer XLT. 4x4 not working but I think it is narrowed down to the hubs. Probably will replace with manual hubs. Also has heater issues. Owner says heater and ac work for several miles but will just shut off for no reason. Has 194k on the truck. Tranny replaced at 106k. Body in very good shape for its age. Interior in good shape also. Excited about having something to fix but also nervous about problems.:usa:

How much you looking to pay for it?

asking $1700. offering $1500.

Finally get to go transfer my "new" ride Wednesday. Starting out with a major tune up. Then to work we go on it. Hope to solve the cold start rough idle problem first. Then the heater issues; current owner says heater will shut off for no reason. Then 4x4 issues. Hope to start posting pictures soon. Wish me luck!

good luck! mine has almost 198k on it and its still running strong since its been regularly maintained.

When you say the heater and the ac shut off, do you mean the fan or blower motor stop running? If so, it is probably just a relay. I've had to replace mine twice now for this exact reason. With the cheap relays out there now, it has become an every two year ritual of replacing all of the relays in the box under the hood on the passenger side fender well. It has the relays for the ABS, Fuel pump, Ignition, AC clutch and the blower motor.

By the way, our 94 has been awesome. 226K and never been down. I've got a few issues now that I cannot resolve but it has been a good ride. This is actually our fourth explorer.

The current owner says it seems like sometimes after it gets warmed up the blower will just shut off. Maybe after awhile it sometimes comes back on. He said it seems like it does better if you leave it on low speed defrost. Relays are where I will start. Cheapest fix to costlier ones. Thanks for the info.

This will be my first Explorer. I've been driving a '95 Escort with a 1.9L for about 15 years now. Darn good motor. Trouble is, I live in the county at the top of a hill with a terrible driveway and its suspension is gone.

Got up this morning and went to the parts house and got my hew warn hubs. Followed the posts about changing from auto to manual, piece of cake. 4x4 now working. Autos were filled with grease. Hardest part was getting the little tab out of the key way.

Drove it to the top of my hill I live on, with 3-4 inches of snow still on. Tomorrow will start on tune up, upper plenum gasket replacement. Axle arm pivot bolt replacement. Also have a small coolant leak down the right front of motor. Hopefully changing the thermostat will fix it. Was surprised when I was under it today, looks like it has had the front bushings replaced.

Don't forget to change all your fluids and filters. Look closely at vacuum hoses for deterioration.

Spent all day changing the intake manifold. When I got down to the lower intake noticed several of the bolts I could turn by hand. Also found one of the vacuum lines going to the EGR had a big hole in it. Hopefully this will take care of my coolant leak and my cold rough idle. New lower intake gasket, valve cover gaskets, o-rings on the injectors, and new plenum gasket. Tore it down and got it all back except for tightening the upper and putting all vac lines and electrical connectors back on. Tomorrow we'll finish her up and start her up and see what happens.

I only broke 2 of the smaller hard vac lines going to the EGR all day. Thats pretty good for me.
