Our son's '03 XLT 2WD pure stock car has been a great vehicle for 191,000 miles. Good ride, decent gas mileage, no oil consumption, cold a/c, etc. and here in Florida, the body has held up perfectly. I've known the car since new and we've had it since 80K.

But recently the transmission decided to start shifting poorly and my local trusted trans specialist advised me that a $3000-3500 bill would be expected for the rebuild. Given the number of miles and the market value, we're left with 3 options:

1) Keep looking for a used transmission, swap it in and sell it as a great running, high mileage car
2) Sell it as-is
3) Sell it as parts. I have a warehouse, tools and enough mechanical ability to do it. The internet makes it feasible, but it seems like a shame to part out such a basically good car.

What do you think? We're not in a hurry, since he's got a different vehicle but I don't want it sitting there for too long.

Second opinion on the trans rebuild. $3k is way high.

Plus 1 with I am Todd. $3000.00 is way too high for a rebuild.

Even if the repair is 3k, you will have a hard time finding something you are as secure with for that amount of money. Just food for thought.

You could spend 10k on a used , unfamiliar vehicle which needs 3k in repairs. You never know.

As others have said $3k -3.5k is way too high for a "rebuilt" transmission, especially since it is a 2 WD vehicle. No 4x4 transfer case or front drive shaft to deal with during the R&R. I'd call around to other shops and get prices, then compare. 2 years ago the tranny in my 4x4 Explorer was rebuilt by a local, high volume Nationally chained tranny shop and the out the door cash price was $1650 at that time. Still running good today.

Just my opinion but I would first find a better deal on the rebuild and then do it. I have a 2002 Explorer XLS 4.0- 4wd that has 119,000 miles on it that are all mine (bought it brand new) I will keep fixing my EX as long as I own it. I have done many many repairs that you read about here but still love this vehicle!

3K is kind of high, closer to 2K should be more right. I have an 04 w/78K and I will have more than 2K just to bring it back to what it should be.

It could just need a new solenoid block and fresh fluid. At that mileage it is probably in need of more, but you never know. Get a second opinion.
