93 Explorer 4X4 will not go into 4 wheel

One other potential problem (Although obviously not in this case). If you shove grease in the auto hubs you can hydrolock them and lose four wheel drive. It happened to me after getting my brakes done at a local tire shop last January, they had apparently packed the hubs with grease, as I...

    Spare Tire Crank Handle

Hey all, I just started working at a used car dealership as the lead tech (Yay me!!:D ) and we got a '98 Ranger extended cab in, and for the life of us we can't find the spare tire crank. The rig came in with the spare in the bed and we wanted it back were it belongs. I ended using the handle...

wth is an airbag sliding contact

I would assume that it's reffering to the clock spring, I would assume that it would look similat to this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-Focus-Clockspring-with-Cruise-05-06_W0QQitemZ110136692141QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting You'll need to check the wiring diagram to verify which...

    Pulling when brakes applied

A partially (Or fully) collapsed brake line on the side opposite the pull will cause a pull as well. The reason behind this is that the brake fluid will get to the caliper that's pulling first and then to the other side. Hope this helps. Pat

    Motorcycle Towing w/ Step Bumper?

Yeah, you can tow it. However depending on how high your rig sits, it's very likely the the trailer won't ride level. This could lead to some trailer sway. With only ~1000 pounds it might not be a big deal, but definitely something to be aware of. Pat

    towing problems with 4wd ranger

The larger tires are going to raise your overall gear ratio, thereby reducing torque and HP. The transfer case is also going to add parasitic losses to you power output. Both of those could easily add up to a noticable decrease in power. I know my '91 X has some issue on long grades towing my...

Engine races to 5000 RPM from the start

My folks had a '92 escort that did this, in that instance it was the computer, apparently it had decided to fry itself. I agree with Mud_Bug, test the TPS and IAC first, those would be the most likely canidates. Pat

    Automatic 4x4

One thing to note. If you've had a front brake job done recently check for excessive grease inside the hubs. After I bought my X last January I had the brakes done in front and noticed that I had lost 4WD not long after. This term I'm doing a steering, suspension and brakes course and while...

    Automatic 4x4

My understanding is that you need the vehicle rolling for 4H to engage, although I think you have to be stopped for 4L. Pat

    93 ball joints questionss

You should have the Dana 35 axle. I know that autozone says that some have the D28 but I've yet to see one in an X. You can tell if it's the 35 by looking for the pinch bolt at the top of the knuckle and ball joint, I believe the 28 used a threaded ball joint instead of the pinch bolt (Someone...

I/P is standard wiring diagram lingo for the instrument panel.

A4LD rebuild for the poor man (or lady).

That sounds like the garter spring, they're built into most seals and is there to ensure a leak proof seal. If you got a new seal for it, it should be in the new seal.

    Brake Fluid

It doesn't neccissarily indicate damage, however your braking performance has got to be degraded if the fluid is as you describe. It would definitely be a good idea to flush you brake system, as old brake fluid generally has absorbed some water and if left in the system for an extended period of...

    brakes

Or are you talking about the slide pins? If you push the ears down, you should be able to drive them out with a punch, just make sure you lube them with silcone grease before reinstalling them. Pat

    Urgent!

Safety glasses merely reduce the risk of injury, they don't negate it completely. Last term in my electrical class I had to rush a classmate to the eye wash station becuase of battery acid in the eye, he was wearing safety glasses as well.

    Cruise Control Not Working

On my '91 the actuator is on the drivers fenderwell not too far from the master cylinder and the clutch master cylinder. Pat

    Rear Driveshaft U-Joint diagnosis/replacement

According to my Haynes manual the torque specs for 91-96, driveshaft to rear axle is 70-95 ft/lbs with a double cardan u joint, and 8-15 ft/lbs with a single. For the t-case to shaft is 12-16 ft/lbs. Pat

    Urgent!

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with going higher capacity. If I recall correctly, the standard capacity battery is 650 and the optional is 850, so anything over 650 will be fine for a mostly stock (electrically speaking) first gen X. Pat

    Urgent!

Also the standard capacity is 650 CCA, Don't cheap out and buy something with less capacity the that, especially if you have a lot of high current draw accessories. The previous owner of my rig dropped a battery that's rated at 425 CCA in to it, and it does cause some issues for me, I just don't...

    Cruise Control

Hmm, I've yet to find it in mine. Of course I normally use the wiring diagrams from mitchell on demand at school, but I'm out of classes till Monday so that doesn't help now :)

    starter wont stop!

The doohicky (gotta' love these fancy technical terms :D) on the fender is the starter relay, the actual solenoid is on the starter itself, so to replace the solenoid you have to replace the starter assembley.
