I say bring on all the car based SUV's that the public will buy. Once they have their SUV's that ride like a car the manufacturers will (hopefully) stop softening the trucks and let them stand as trucks.

I've driven the Escape and I like it. It is a very roomy well laid out vehicle with a decent amount of power. Sure it isn't a hard core off roader but then again neither is the Explorer. If you are unsure about the Escape I'd say go drive one. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I agree with Paul here. Bring them on! Then maybe the manufactures will see the need for a nice old fashioned real truck like SUV. Doughtfull but it could happen.

If I had the choice right now and I could get either one. It would be the Escape. I would keep my Explorer sell my Escort and get an Escape. A nice tall car would be nicer in the traffic I sit in sometimes. That way I could at least sorta see whats going on. Plus you can still haul some crap around in it. Now I would not buy a newer Explorer just because of all the reasons everyone has listed about the Escape. The front suspension of the newer Explorers is the same as what is on the current Escape. So all of you that are saying you wouldn't buy it on that fact alone are not being fair to yourself. You already have a vehicle that runs the crappy IFS. :) Now if you get down to the power, and size, and just what you would use it for THEN you could complain. :) But not just basing it on the axles alone. At least those are my feelings....

ya got me there rpenner, I just drove my parents towncar today because my mom can't see at night.. and I was thinking how nice sitting high up is in an suv.. even though an explorer doesn't look that big in comparison to other trucks. that is a great advantage I've noticed over the years but haven't consciously stated like that.. if you are in a line of cars.. your reaction time is better because you can see the car 5 spaces in front of you slam on brakes and have time to react.. heh the only problem with this.. when everyone gets suvs.. what are we gonna do then? :p

I like the ride height too, but the ride is just way too harsh for me to deal with all day. I put about 30,000 miles a year on my car, so comfort is the key.

you don't like the ride of the explorer? I find it quite acceptable.. infact.. after riding in some of my friends cars.. I actually have a softer ride than theirs I like a vehicle you can FEEL the road.. now I have ridden in a focus.. it takes what I just said to an extreme.. you can feel the road alright.. every bump bounce dip rock pebble in the pavement.. its horrible.. I'd say the excess room in an suv gives the shocks more time to deal with little bumps..

Problem is its a full frame truck with a live real axle. That causes a lot of side to side movement that is just murder on my back. In my Lexus you literally feel no bumps, you can barely feel speed bumps (I dont even slow down anymore lol) dont do that in the Explorer though!

too late ;) I've jerked my guts out over a few speed bumps in my day.. especially the speed "humps" at my college that literally throw the back of your car forward when you go over it fast.. I hate those things!! must be nice.. I'd like a lexu LX470 (I think thats right) myself.. but base MSRP is like $65k and I'm a currently unemployed 19 year old.. so no hope there

Watched Motorweek on Monday, and they gave the highest honors to the Escape/ Mazda whatchamacalit.

I believe it was vehicle of the year or something like that.

I agree that the Sport is the way to go. Between the Two. The Escape is a nice you must remember that it is intended for other buyers. The Escape is FWD ok it is intended for people that want a vechicle to haul everything from Bikes to Laundry but don't want the station wagon or minivan. FWD would be better in the snow than a RWD.

The Escape is not intended to go Fourwheeling nor should it.
I would say that 85% of people that own 4X4's NEVER go off road. Before buying mine I looked at other SUV's I found 3 People that admitted after 50,000 - 75,000 mile on there SUV's they were selling. NEVER even ingaged the 4x4. They paid the extra money for the option and never used it. They said it was a safety feature. For the money what were they thinking.

I test drove a 97 Blazer that never had the 4x4 engaged took it out and the guy freaked. I looked under the truck and I felt it never was taken off road let alone engaged the 4x4. He got out and drove, read the owners manual on how to engage the 4x4. When he did it wouldn't work then I heard some Grinding. I left him with his problem he was pissed at me tried to blame me. Any how those are some of the people that this Truck is aimed at. People that will never use it for what is infact it's intended purpose. Thanks for the vent.

Drive it the way it is ment to be driven.

saftey feature? heh.. is that the future of offroading? maybe it is in SUBARUS.. but not in most real offroad vehicles.. I'm sorry guys.. but the forrester sucks :p just my opinion there.. but I still would go with the explorer sport just because it is RWD.. we don't get snow down here at all, so I don't take that into consideration, however.. you know its always the buyers final word.. we can only argue about it for you ;)

I had a neighbor in North Carolina where I was Stationed in the Air Force. I notice he was moving a Washer or Dryer into his Explorer. I went over to help. Nice older Guy ok not so old I was just Young.

Any how after it was loaded I noticed he had it in 4WD LO. This was in his front lawn. Flat, 1 inch of unmowed grass. I asked him about he said he didn't want to get stuck. Get stuck in your front lawn. He took care of his lawn won all sorts of awards with it but. Didn't want to get stuck.
I would say that it's because he was from North Carolina but I've heard of it from Friends of mine that have worked in Dealerships across the country.
SALESMAN: Yes sir, you wish to trade in you Blazer/Rodeo/Explorer. It's a 4WD have you ever used it?
OWNER: Yes only in my front lawn so I don't get stuck.
I guess the brite side is that people like that Keep the demand for the 4x4's up and the prices down.

oh yes definatley.. if people stopped buying them for "saftey features" the markey may stop making 4wd suvs and stick to trucks.. thats also a good point

Explorer Sport '02

I'm new to the "Explorerforum", and I was happy to see a debate on Explorer Sport vs. the Escape. I will be in the market for a new car soon, and I'm debating between the Explorer Sport and the Escape. I really like the Explorer Sport, but the only thing is that it's a 2-door. The escape has 4-doors which would be very useful. Can anyone tell me how easy it is to get into the back seat of the Explorer Sport? Is there a tip slide feature with the front seats for easier entry/exits? I find that the Explorer Sport's interior is far nicer than the Escape, and it looks like there is more interior space in the Explorer Sport. A lot of you are probably saying to get the 4-door Explorer, but it just doesn't look as good to me as the Sport does. It just too big for me. I would appreciate anyone's opinion...Thanks!

Marina

yeah but according to dmv i have a 4 door utility wagon

Realized my answer didn't make sense and deleted it.

I have a 96 Sport. Comparing the 2door X to the 4 door X, the 4 door is obviously easier to get into the back. However, considering that the rear doors of the Escape are small, it's about the same to get in and out of as the X Sport. The seats do have a single-action tip forward and slide forward for easy access. It's a climb for some people, but once you get the hang of it, getting into the back of my X is no big deal.

Exp or Esc...

If I would be to buy a new 4wd, I would choose the Escape because it better answer my needs(actually wife needs). I dont go that often of road(wife does not want me to scratch the truck or break part on it...), at one time I told her "Why did we buy a 4x4 truck, when we could have done it with a minivan". Now she doesn't want to be seperated from it, it's good in snow, it's big in trafic(so other repect her)and she can see better. Still it depend one what ue it is intended for, me it's mostly for hauling big heavy stuff, trailers and the price was lower for a used Exp than a new CRV(or equal). I use the truckability but the 4x4 almost only in winter.
