I have a 96 Explorer, and the instrument lights went out a couple days ago. Turned out to be the dimmer switch; actually it's called a dimmer module. The module would dim the radio and 4x4 lights, but the dash was dark. The part cost $115 at Ford (ugghh...), but was easy to replace by reading through the thread about pulling the dash panel to replace the headlight switch bulb. I also replaced the headlight switch since the bulb was burnt and one of the contacts seemed shot. At 150K miles, little things are starting to wear out - oh well...
