This is my first post to this site. I am a regular on themustangsource.com and modular fords because I have an 06 Mustang GT that I've modded to death, but the explorer is new for me. I'm about to pull the trigger (I think) on an 06 Explorer Limited. I really want a V8, but the one I'm looking at has the V6 and every other option the wife wants. How many of you with the V6 have done a custom tune and what were the results? Does it have more "umph?" I've driven several V8's and the V6 doesn't seem like a dog or anything, but I can sure tell a difference in the two motors. I'd get this V6 if I knew a custom tune and a cold air intake would unleash some power from the somewhat underpowered V6. Opinions, suggestions, and thoughts on this topic are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Rob in Mustang, Ok.

Wish I went for the V8 myself now. KKM intaked helped mid range power but whistles a little.

dont know about the V6, but alot of the V8 owners are able to get a lot more power from a tune and an intake. Xcal 2 seems to be the most popular tuner here. I have it and it was worth every penny.

I can custom tune your Explorer for you! I also offer CAI's and catbacks. I would recommend an underdrive pulley for your setup as well.-James;)

i think that if some one took a v6 and decked the block and then blue printed the engine and added swirl ground valves and put on one of those chips therd be a great increase of power and efficenty (i think that would be the way to go)

what do you mean by
(decked the block and then blue printed the engine and added swirl ground valves)

I have the 4.0L V6 and after searching all over the web there isn't much avalible in terms of engine mods. There is a few exhaust systems and maybe an intake or two but thats not going to increase your horsepower that much. With the current price of everyones favorite friend GASOLINE i would say go with the V6.

Ya go V8. Milage is not too different and the power difference is significant for such a heavy truck. With the lack of mods available for both engines... I dont think you will be able to get the v6 built up enough if your are looking for "umph".

welcome aboard

I think it depends on what you want to do with it. If it's just going to be a DD that you want a little more power out of, the V6 should serve you well with a few hundred in mods... intake/exhaust/tune are said to get a nice performance increase from the 6er, but if you are looking for something that's going to put out crazy amounts of power, stick with the V8.

EDIT: I've got the V6 stock, and it's got pretty good acceleration -- the main problem is that these engines are throttle-by-wire, and I notice a bit of throttle lag when you get on it... a tune can fix that, I believe, since it's computer-controlled. With an '06, you'll want to either make sure that the latest PCM updates have been done to fix the transmission issues, or that you get that update done. There's a thread about the TSB somewhere on here.

Lack of V8 mods?

Yeah... what is there really? Unless you go custom. Only real parts out there are some tuners, Cat-back and intake. The thottle body is just a modified stock unit. I just wish we had the same type of aftermarket support the mustangs enjoy. :) Gone are the days of Explorer popularity.

There's all kinds of stuff! It just doesn't say "Explorer" on it. What kind of parts do you want?

I am thinking along the lines of headers, heads, maybe an upper intake... an aftermarket throttle body... to name a few.

You can get heads (REALLY expensive, though).
