I am currently running an offroad Y pipe which was custom made. This means I have 2.5" piping from the manifolds that combine in to a Y pipe then go out to the muffler. If you have stock piping, Holley only makes one muffler that would work for you if you went MaxFlow. That would be this one

http://www.holley.com/21810HKR.asp

Now to run that muffler, you HAVE to run dual outlets. I didnt want dual outlets, I wanted a single 2.5" pipe running out the back. The reason for this is I did have dual outlets once and I lost low end power from it. Now, if you want to run this muffler without duals, you will need to convert your stock config so it will go into 1 pipe then into a muffler. This is where the Y pipe comes in. You would cut off the stock muffler, weld in the Y pipe, then run a single pipe from the Y pipe to the muffler.

The cherry bomb would be your cheapest bet, as they make a muffler that will fit your needs perfectly if you're running a stock setup without big mods like I did

If you want to run all stock pipe and just replace the muffler, the Vortex muffler you would want is the 88106

If you want to keep the stock pipes but replace the muffler then the tail pipe with a 2.5", which is optimum for our motors, you would get the 88107. This will allow the dual 2.25" stock pipes to enter the muffler, then run a 2.5" to the rear and you're set.

The main reason I had a Y pipe put in is because I always wanted an original 40 flowmaster but they didnt make dual inlet configs. Also- please make sure you know I picked my muffler due to the charts above. I wanted to maximize power and MPG while not having drone and getting loud when I step on it. The maxflo fit that; however, you will need a Y pipe to get the most out of it to install it. As for a video, I need to find someone with a cam to borrow

Thanks for the video Shortstack

Incorrect.

I've been researching and decided that I will go with one of these mufflers. Both of them are 2.25" dual inlets with 2.5" single outlet.

Cherry Bomb Vortex 88107

or

Hooker Max Flow 21803HKR

And I'll run 2.5" piping out the back. I'll be ordering one of the two tomorrow and I'll let you know what I go with. Thank you for all the help!

I stand corrected. I apologize. I did a search on summit and these mufflers are reversable, but summit didnt state it as so so it was coming up as single in, dual out. I will have my video clip up tomorrow. I am borrowing a co workers digi cam

Haha, no biggie. I just saw you write that and I thought I was seeing things or something. I'm thinking I may go that route. What you're describing for noise level, performance, cruising noise level would be perfect for me. A video would be awesome! Thanks.

Sounds good! Which series IMCO/Cherry Bomb is that? pro?

Also- what happened to your mag? The "guts" finally blow out?

As for my vid everyone- I have a memory card in the mail im waiting for. My camera only goes 8 seconds without it :(

The cones on the ends of the muffler separated from the muffler body itself. They then got too rusted to weld back on to the muffler body. The exhaust shop I brought it too said they have seen this happen 3 or 4 times. I honestly don't have a clue what kind of IMCO it is, I have been wondering that myself. I just told them to put a muffler on there that sounds like a Flowmaster 40 series but doesn't cost as much. I am happy with it so far. Really, it sounds as quiet as my Magnaflow did on the inside of the truck but outside it sounds much louder (and better).

it's probably the Pro series then. Thats a flowmaster 40 series knock off FYI IMCO no longer exists, they got bought out by cherry bomb ;)

So finally the memory card for the camera I was given came in. Here is a sound byte of my exhaust. Specs on it are in my sig. I only revved to 3k most of the time then 4k once since my neighbors were outside. Ill get a drive by tomorrow when the GF comes over to help me tape it

Sounds good. Hopefully mine sounds that good. No drone huh. If it sounds like that yet quiet at cruising speed I'll be very happy. I still have cats so I'm assuming it'll be toned down a bit. I'm getting mine welded up next Saturday. I'm going to have them stop the tailpipe and turn it down at the last hanger. That way you can't see the exhaust. I thought it would look better that way. Then my Volant is going to be here tomorrow (knock on wood) then I'll be happy for awhile...

Nice dress shoes by the way. Shiny!

Remember that cats tone down exhaust A LOT. No cats= louder, deeper, throatier. I also have an offroad Y pipe which has 2.5" piping from the manifolds back, whereas you will have stock 2.25 inch piping up to the Y pipe. I also have all mandrel bent piping. Yours wont be as loud. The max flow is a pretty quiet muffler until you get on it. There is a sound chart I posted earlier that proves this on a DB meter as well. As for the shoes- yes those are my work shoes lol Im posting up two more videos to show how it is cruising. I had a flowmaster 40 series so I know drone- these are MUCh quieter and flow much better

This first one, the first part I had the windows fully up, then I rolled them all the way down. This is to show how it sounds while I drive.

This one is to show how my exhaust sounds half way down and crusing. Toward the end at the long a*s stop light, I rolled them up to show how it sounds

Good, because loudness I could care less about. I would actually prefer it to be as close to stock sound as possible to be honest. Non rice and performance, better flow is all that matters to me. It's going to be a long week...

You totally got theat Nissan with the old man at it in the end! Sounds good though

Well I got my exhaust done yesterday and I must say that I'm quite pleased with it. Sounds perfect at idle, nice deep sound, quiet when cruising which is exactly what I was hoping for, and definitely louder when I get on it. I used the Magnaflow y-pipe and a Hooker MaxFlow with 2.5" piping out the back. I took it to a CarX and they a did a great job. Exactly what I wanted. I had them turn the tip down too at the last hanger to keep it hidden and it came out great. The guy who did it actually used the have an Explorer so that made me feel good about it. Here are some pics I snapped. No video yet.

post a sound clip of ur exhaust 97shogt

very glad to see you are pleased with it! Im curious to see how it sounds compared to mine. I would slap some high temp black engine paint on it asap to prevent rusting...esspecially on the welds. Im curious- on the last pic you have something connected to the leaf spring. What is this? Some kind of lift thing? Did you show them the pic I sent you on where to cut and reweld the stock support welds?

I forgot to thank you for all the advice. Turned out great. Absolutely what I was looking for. I plan on painting it tomorrow. You have any suggestions or just Rustoleum? And yes, I put that picture in the box with the y-pipe. Looks familiar doesn't it :)

I think you're talking about the Warrior shackles. If so, I did that and the torsion twist a while back. I still have to put my Bilstein's on I got a couple weeks ago. Then some slightly bigger tires and I think I'll be modded out on this thing. I don't want to get too crazy with it.

Update for everybody. I have had my new exhaust on for about five days now and guess what...time for a new muffler! After about three days I noticed a rattling sound. I was like, well maybe one of the clamps got loose or something. Well it started to drive me nuts so I took it to the place I got it put on. They put it in the air and took a look. Well it turns out that it is nothing with what they did, but it is the baffle inside the muffler that is loose. I was standing there when they were looking at it too so I believe them. Go figure.

Well I called up Summit (where I got it from) and a few minutes later they said they would ship me another one and throw return the shipping label with the new one. Then I can throw the old one in that box when it gets here, ship it back and hopefully be done with it. Excellent customer service assuming everything pans out. So hopefully second times a charm. I really like the muffler and how it sounded. Now its got me wondering about quality. Time will tell I guess. I'll try to get a video of it with the muffler messed up this weekend.
