4.0 Exhaust Clip Thread !

Update for everybody. I have had my new exhaust on for about five days now and guess what...time for a new muffler! After about three days I noticed a rattling sound. I was like, well maybe one of the clamps got loose or something. Well it started to drive me nuts so I took it to the place I got it put on. They put it in the air and took a look. Well it turns out that it is nothing with what they did, but it is the baffle inside the muffler that is loose. I was standing there when they were looking at it too so I believe them. Go figure.

Well I called up Summit (where I got it from) and a few minutes later they said they would ship me another one and throw return the shipping label with the new one. Then I can throw the old one in that box when it gets here, ship it back and hopefully be done with it. Excellent customer service assuming everything pans out. So hopefully second times a charm. I really like the muffler and how it sounded. Now its got me wondering about quality. Time will tell I guess. I'll try to get a video of it with the muffler messed up this weekend.

Oh wow, really? Ive had my muffler for months and Ive had no problems at all! Perhaps you just got a "bad egg"? That sucks. Atleast summit is decent enough to take care of you like they are. You would think a name like Hooker Headers would have no problems with their products. Its not like it's thrush or anything like that. Plus the muffler is pretty beefy. Sorry to hear about that!

Yeah. They got it all set up no questions asked so I hope everything goes well. I agree though. I was very suprised to see that was the problem. I'll be interested to look in there when I get it off. I loved it for the first couple days though. Now I just have to tolerate it for a few more. At least I get to put my Bilstein's on tomorrow :D

So, how does it sound? I have my flowmaster Original 40 delta back on. I need to take a vid with my new camera. I plan on doing a drive by during the day tomorrow :)

Honestly it sounds like I have an aluminum can stuck in the muffler. The second went to hell less than a week after putting it on. Pretty poor quality product.

Wow- you would think a name like Hooker would be quality. Did summit take it back again? I would and get something different. My max flow worked great. I decided to take it off and put the old Flowmaster 40 series back on because I wanted that loud growl back. I forgot just how loud it was! I wish sometimes it was the delta flow because it gets really loud ess. with the offroad pipes. I feel bad for recomended you that muffler- but it hasnt let me down yet *knock on wood". You could always try a turbo muffler? It wont flow as well as a max flow or be as loud, but its def a noticable change over stock. I had it on with a cat back when I got an exhaust ticket- $20 thrush from advance auto parts. Had it on for 6 months with no probs

haha that sucks, you should've gotten the cherry bomb vortex muffer :)

Haha, agreed!

No big deal man. You can only go off your experience. I'm just going to stick with it and see if it starts to go away. the last one kind of got better right before I replaced it so we'll see. I looked in it and it seems like the welded the baffle just enough to kepp it in there. The expansion from the heat must work it loose or something. Oh well, I can't afford to keep having somebody put a new muffler on for me every two weeks. I think Hooker should reimburse me for that...

I got some new sound clips up. I wanted a little more sound out of the explorer so the Hooker Maxflow came off and the Flowmaster Original 40 went back on. Got it DB Metered- 84 dbs at idle, 118 dbs at 4500-5000 RPMS. She gets loud

Excuse my girlfriend laughing. She thought this whole idea of me taping my truck was funny- plus I guess she forgot that we were making SOUND BITES. Sigh- oh well. I explained it's a guy thing lol

just got my exhaust work done was going to put a flowmaster 40 on but when they took my stock muffler off they lowered the truck and fired it up just to see how it would sound and changed my mind really quick. So we went with straight pipe all the way back split into duals with new tips and sounds so good. We had a slight problem putting on the dual but we finally got it and it looks very good.

adam u got sound clips

So after reading everything, I'm still just slightly confused about what muffler to get. (And this is mostly thanks to YouTube's crappy audio quality on these, and my temporary lack of broadband internet to go to the video site.)
I have a 2005 Ex 4.0 SOHC, and I'm looking for that big block V8 sound, but at a more tame volume most of the time.

Out of everything you all have heard and know, what's gonna be the best for my truck?

Thanks!
Matt

ok cant wait to hear it adam

I'm running dual Flowmaster 40 originals (non-deltas) using the stock 2.25" diameter all around.

At first, I just clamped the two on the two parallel pipes running from the cats. Idle was orgasmic, but the drone on the highway was not only unbearable, but embarrassing (screaming wanna-be-V8'er).

But there was definitely a "break-in", and especially after adding flexible tail pipes out to the bumper, the drone is gone and it sounds awesome!

So take the "break in" period into consideration when listening to sound clips right after an installation.

well I have the sound clips I just have to figure how to get them off of my blackberry in the right format.

what kind of blackberry do u got i got a blackberry curve 8310 and i dunno how to do video on mine.

Cause on my cell i can take pics but i dunno how to do video.

Lose of Power?

I've seen a few 4.0's with duals and i was wondering if you guys experience any loss of power due to the loss of back pressure. Several people have said that running duals will decrease the back pressure too much and it will decrease the power. I've been thinking about getting a decent exhaust because i just had a stock one put back on... for about twice what it would've cost..:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: anyway. I have decided on the Cherry bomb Vortex i was debating on the dual in/dual out or the dual in single out versions. But the main question is. will i lose power or gain it?

I didn't experience any difference in power. I specifically stayed with the stock 2.25" tubing all around, which also simplifies everything. It seems the consensus here is an increase to 2.5" gives power but anymore and you drop off, but this may be assuming a single more restrictive muffler.

It's all about the tuning. The stock engine computer was optimally tuned using the inferior restrictive stock exhaust. Freeing up the exhaust in any way will result in a less than ideal lean fuel ratio. If you want to open the exhaust up significantly, then an aftermarket chip would compliment it nicely, it would remap the fuel delivery assuming a popular aftermarket exhaust.

Getting the engine professionally tuned on a dyno is ideal, then the more you can free up the exhaust the better.

If your not retuning, don't unrestrict the exhaust much more than stock.

I love my dual 40 series flows on my 01 sport and it sounds awesome

Hey, I just had a Flowmaster 70 series welded into my 99 SOHC today. I'm very happy with it. It's not too loud, but has a nice bassy rumble to it. No drone whatsoever. I kept the stock piping and resonator too. I'll post a video sometime tonight.
